Note that this is mainly for M2TW, but a lot of these issues can occur for all the games that use GameSpy.

The most common GameSpy errors that we know of are the following:
  • Failed to login
  • Login Failed - invalid CD-key
  • Can't connect to host
  • Failed to join game (GS error)
  • Game stalled, network problems for player [name]
  • NAT negotiation error
  • Can't see the games in the lobby
  • Failed to login - invalid player profile

*Special mention for people that have the Steam version of M2TW at the bottom.*

Failed To Login

This is quite a common problem that for some people does happen more often then for others (you might never even have experienced it).
It comes down to a very simple fact: your PC does not connect to the GameSpy server.
If it happens, ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do you have a fast and reliable internet connection? Broadband and over 128kb/sec is recommended. You can play with a slower connection, but the game will go slower and not everyone (your opponent for example) likes that.
  • Do you have a firewall installed? If yes, allow MTW2 to make connections with the internet or switch it off.
  • Do you have any background programs running? Culprits may be IM services like MSN, or P2P programs and Torrent programs.
  • Do you have virtual LAN programs like Hamachi, GameRanger, etc. installed. For some reason GameSpy hates these.
  • Have you opened the following ports on your firewall or router? (look at SEGA support article for more info)
* 27750 (Medieval II - Total War)
* 6667 (IRC)
* 3783 (Voice Chat Port)
* 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
* 28900 (Master Server List Request)
* 29900 (GP Connection Manager)
* 29901 (GP Search Manager)
* 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
* 6515 (Dplay UDP)
* 6500 (Query Port)

Failed To Login - Invalid CD-key

Maybe the most common problem of the lot. It was easy to solve in RTW, but much harder to change in M2TW. NOTE THAT THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MODIFY YOUR REGISTRY. BE VERY CAREFUL IN HERE OR ELSE YOU WILL BLOW UP YOUR COMPUTER!!! Seriously though, be careful. Bad stuff happens if you have no idea what you're doing while modifying the registry.

Changing your M2TW CD-Key is quite easy to solve:
  1. Open Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type: regedit and press Enter
  4. Now go to this directory: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War"
  5. You'll see a value representing the CD-Key. Change it to what it should be. Some tips for typing in you CD-Key:
    • Don't type spaces
    • Do type the hyphens "-"
    • Don't use "o", use zeroes "0"
    • Type all the letters in as capital letters

Can't Connect To Host

A common problem in RTW and it came back in MTW2. But luckily for you it's a problem with the host.
He can have:
  • Alt-Tabbed out from the game: This can be a problem, since it means you cannot tell him about it. Remember, never Alt-Tab ever, in MP TW (TW games like ETW and newer don't have this problem).
  • Background programs running and interfering: Could be MSN, could be running P2P torrents, could be an internet browser. Heck it could even be things like Ventrilo, Xfire, or Teamspeak.
  • He has virtual LAN programs like Hamachi, GameRanger, etc. installed. Again, GameSpy hates these.
  • Simply a bad internet connection, again nothing you can do about it, but it does prevent you from playing with him.

Failed To Join Game (GS error)

This is more or less the same as Failed To Login. Something is preventing your PC from connecting with the GS server. The GS server used by MTW2/RTW is buggy and not entirely stable. The best thing to as I said above is to have a good internet connection, have no background programs running (P2P/torrents), uninstall Hamachi/GameRanger, clear your ports, host your own games, and to make the best of it if nothing works.

Game stalled, network problems for player [name]

This occurs while fighting a battle or while in the lobby, but it is always the same problem:
  • The player Alt-Tabbed out of the game: Tell him not to do it again. It may crash that game, which means you'll have to start MP all over again.
  • The player has a bad connection and his graphic settings are too high: Again little can be done about this. Closing all background programs allows the PC to fully concentrate on MTW2 and might help a bit, but with this game a good connection is always better then an average connection. I'm not telling you to get a new ISP, just set all settings (graphics and sounds) to the lowest.
  • GS is playing up: This is irritating, but nothing can be done about it. It simply sometimes happens and it isn't nice.

NAT Negotiation Error

This problem was new with MTW2, but now that we know about it, it's easily solved. Simply open the following ports (same as posted above) and it should work:
* 27750 (Medieval II - Total War)
* 6667 (IRC)
* 3783 (Voice Chat Port)
* 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
* 28900 (Master Server List Request)
* 29900 (GP Connection Manager)
* 29901 (GP Search Manager)
* 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
* 6515 (Dplay UDP)
* 6500 (Query Port)
If you don't know how to open ports, consider reviewing the linked SEGA support post. If your firewall doesn't have these settings, the best option you have is logging out and logging in again.

Can't see the games in the lobby

A) Make sure you're in the right lobby. For example, people in RTW usually hang out in the Friendly lobby.
B) This used to be quite a problem, but the patches have taken care of all this. If you don't see any games in the lobby, download the latest patch because everyone will be using it.

Failed To Login - Invalid Player Profile

Remember that you need to enter the following:
Your account name, the corresponding email adresss, and the corresponding password.
First check if you all did this correctly (some people also typed the cd-key in the Password line). Make sure you didn't make typing errors, as they can make sure it isn't working.
If it still doesn't work, try this:
  • Go to www.gamespyid.com
  • Login using your email and password
  • Click the username
  • If you haven't verified your account do so
Now try logging into the lobby again.

If you get redirected to IGN when accessing gamespyid.com, try using GameSpy Arcade to edit your account instead: http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/solution-for-editing-your-gamespy-id-account.452602352/

Consider having a look at this thread about creating an IGN account. Trying to create a new GameSpyID on gamespyid.com will redirect you to IGN, as GameSpy was bought out by them. Your new IGN username and password should work when signing into GameSpy.

*People that bought M2TW from Steam, but previously had a box or retail copy of M2TW will not be able to use their old GameSpy accounts or CD-key. In this case, you'll need to create a new account at IGN and use your IGN username/password. Note that during installation, Steam automatically puts the CD-key into your Windows registry in a currently unknown location; the key does not arrive by email.*

If this all doesn't help you out, simply ask. The best thing to do is to make a thread in our Technical Support Forum and wait for one of our volunteer Tech Mods to give you an answer.
