Europa Barbarorum or Roma Surrectum?

Hello all,

I'm a long time fan of the RTW series, but I would like to experience some of the mods. Which of these two mods would you personally recommend? I really like the history aspect of the game, and after researching both mods, I am undecided. Which one do you like better?

Also, I like to use cheats to make the game more fun. Do these mods allow you to use the same cheats from RTW?

Thanks in advance guys!

I would love to recommend Europa Barbarorum but I can't because the installation is a total mess, the EB team spent years creating this mod and then fell at the last hurdle by making it practically impossible to install by anyone that isn't already experienced in modding. If you do decide to try it out then you will need to download and install the main programme then a couple of patches and then some hotfixes. It was hoped that a member of the team would at some point collect all the parts together and make a simple installer for use by everyone but unfortunately it never happened.

Roma Surrectum 2 is due out any day now and they have taken the opposite approach where they are including a proper installer to insure that their mod is accessible to everyone so if you decide to go for the RS series then I strongly recommend you wait for the mark 2 version.

Out of the two series I would have to recommend RS as thanks to the complicated installation process EB (for me) has turned out to be a buggy and unstable mod on the occasions I have tried to install it.

I'm using EB right now. Didn't have any problem with the installation and I haven't found a bug yet. It truly is a great mod. I haven't tried RS though.

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

I couldn't find a download of EB that would seed on my computer (first time modder), so I just decided to download RS1.6. I figure I would get version 2.0 when it comes out, but last night I was really dying to play! So far, RS is really awesome and the idea of recruiting specific legions is great.

Anyway, thank you all for your input! :)

RTW 1 fan - betrayed, disillusioned, disgusted with Rome 2. For me, a Real Rome 2 (and finish) is Rome 1 + graphics/IA/Diplomacy of Rome 2, or the actually Rome 2 which we add all the functions mentioned here :

Played RS2 today It's excellent and incredibly easy to install. It's much better than EB however it's rumoured that an EB2 is also in the works and I have no doubt the team will be having a good look at RS2 to make sure they overtake them again lol -just hope they make a newbie friendly one this time.

I've been playing RSII today. It's so much better than EB. You should definitely give it a try.

Both mods have their fans. For me it's EB all the way. Simply because the immersion offered is superior to RS. All the extra historical information you can read gives you a feeling of 'living in the times'.

Played both and definitely prefer RS2. I love the new buildings, trait system, unit types\areas of recruitment, graphics etc. Its pushed the RTW engine so far. I'm pretty sure even CA would be amazed if they had a look.

Any idea whether EB2 is going to be for M2TW or RTW? I heard that it was being made for M2?

Have only played EB so far. Might try RSII in the future.
But I heard they use 0-turn recruitment and so you have to fight endless battles. Is this correct?

You can play a 1-turn campaign as well. I've played a 0-turn campaign for about 20-30 hours and I'm loving it so far. Yeah, you are at war with almost all of you neighbours with huge stacks coming in all the time but the way to counter this is simply to go on the offensive. Destroy the enemy armies, capture their settlements and make them PAY for declaring war on you. :) At first I planned to conquer Greece (I'm playing as the Romans), fortify my northern borders and develop my economy so I can start an invasion on all fronts and dominate the world. I soon learned this was not going to work, as new factions declared war on me and now I'm fighting a defensive war on all fronts (WW2 much? :)). I've lost my Spanish settlements and the Averni (or whatever) are knocking on my door at northern Italy with about 6000 men as we speak. The Dacians invaded my settlements in northern Greece but thanks to my phalanxes I've been able to beat them back with relative ease. This is the most fun I've had in TW since the last time I played EB! :D

does RSII have expanded historical battles like EB? by the way, i love EB because you really cant snowball as much as in vanilla. the campaign stays interesting for a LONG time. Unlike vanilla in which by the time you reach turn 50, you're making endless money and stacks.

RSII has an interesting idea which simulates running costs of buildings so basically you have to carefully decide on purchases before you make them. For instance if you buy a temple it may cost you 1000dn to build and give you a 5% increase in happiness across your settlement but the drawback is that it may also cost say a 10% reduction in city taxes to pay for it's upkeep over the coming years.

Most buildings cost taxes and so this stops the player becoming so rich that they just blitz the game.

ahhh that is interesting, in EB it's just higher building, unit, unit upkeep, and merc cost.

I am in the process of playing my first eb campaign . and man is it good I am fully enjoying every aspect of it they really did a great job on making that mod. I am feeling rome's plight with I need to make the frontier safe and then i have a new frontier to need to make safe and keeps going...

Yes, sorry I didn't answer your question. :p You must have a clean RTW version 1.5 installation on your computer. That's it.

You'll find download links for EB on their website: http://www.europabarbarorum.com/downloads_mod.html

Just take a look at their forum. You have to install the mod and then the 2.1a patch afterwards.
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=251

It runs with all three versions RTW 1.5, Barbarian Invasion 1.6 and with the Alexander expansion.

Ya I'm with Ceasar, I can't find a link to install it. I'm sorry to say but TWCenter is an outdated site that's navigation is near impossible.
Upon joining her first convoy at Plymouth, Periwinkle had the following exchange with a destroyer: "What are you?" "Periwinkle." "Can I stick a pin in you?" "No, I am a pale blue flower--not a shellfish." "Then I will come over and fertilize you." Later Periwinkle had the satisfaction of sinking the U-boat 147. (Nathan Miller, War At Sea, page 105) The Lesson here is simple, a corvette named after a flower is like a wizard in a dress, don't judge a book by it's cover.
