Total War Attila is unplayable

Hi all, I play on a Mac and Attila freezes constantly for me. When I start it up via steam, it goes through the intro cinematics just fine. Whenever I get to the main menu, everything seems normal until I put my mouse cursor over the custom battles. When I do that, the horses in the background freeze and I can not click on anything. However, the music continues to play and I can still move my mouse cursor. I have to turn off my laptop and turn it back on.
If I click on the prologue, the game goes to a loading screen. However, once it loads, it freezes on the loading screen and some music starts to play. I suspect that's the music I should hear while in game.

I have played Rome, medieval 2, empire, and Rome 2 with no problems whatsoever.

My mac is on the older side, but I see that most Mac users have experienced this problem and are yet to find a solution. Since I ran Rome 2, I don't think there should be a problem with running Attila on low.

I run a 2010 MacBook with OSX 10.9.2.
