User Info RequiredGame/PC freeze when graphics are changed

If I attempt to change the graphics settings, via either in game menu or main menu, the game freezes itself and the PC on the subsequent loading screen. The progress bar will load about 1/8, then stop making progress. When that happens, the computer locks up; crtl+alt+del/alt+f4/windows button fail to get a response out of the computer, forcing a manual shutdown via the power button.

Im currently playing on an alienware laptop with i7 and nvidia 970m graphics. I've made sure all my drivers are up to date and have verified the integrity of the game cache (steam game).

Any thoughts on a possible solution?
