Hero Sniping

Overall I think the game is well balanced, but one thing that does suck out a lot of the enjoyment is hero sniping.

For those that don't know, Hero sniping is when you use a general with a magic missile spell to kill the enemy's general before the real battle has even begun. A spell like spirit leech can kill a general in 3 just casts (less than 30 seconds), often routing him in just two.

I'm making this post in the hope that CA will revise this mechanic, granting all generals 80% magic missile resistance. With this change, generals would still be vulnerable to a melee or sniper attack, but would no longer be killable from magic missile sniping. I feel this is a change many players would agree with, and allow players to focus more on playing the game and their armies, and less on the watery Syrio Forel water dance of heroes. Excuse the Game of Thrones reference.

Sincerely hoping this change is made soon.

Hero sniping with spirit leach or missile spells like gaze of nagash makes the game look and play really cheesy

A nerf to hero sniping is a buff to multiplayer fun

I agree that magic missiles, spirit leech and fate of bjuna need a nerf, but I dont agree with your way of going about it. 80% resistance to magic missiles is not a good way of fixing these spells. First of all they need to work on army scaling in mp, then they need to make the damage scale based on the army size, and finally nerf the damage of these spells accordingly. Also, enitrely gutting the spells is just dumb, the more variety the better, as long as it makes a healthy difference in the game.

Not sure if 80 percent magic resistances is the way to go, but spells like spirit leech would still be very good against other single model units since the resist would only be on the lord. In no way is spirit leech "gutted" at that point.

I just think that while hero assassinations should be toned down, they should not be removed entirely. Spirit Leech is an assassination tool on the tabletop, the only difference here is that its a little bit overtuned for what it is supposed to do. Making the spell less cost effective, do less damage, have a longer cooldown, have less range while keeping it as a choice of assassinating lords are all viable options. I guess what I'm saying is that picking between casting it on a lord and a different high value single entity should be a choice. Maybe turn it into percentage damage spell instead of a fixed amount, or just add items in the multiplayer so people can gear their lord to cover their weaknesses.

add items to multiplayer, they probably going to, cause theres an equipment option on the army creation, that would probably solve a lot of issues and make multiplayer more enjoyable and customize it in a much more fun way, like the tabletop

would absolutely love an equipment option and it'd fix alot of the current issues in the game.

Alas, the equipment option is for siege battles mitu.

I just played my first multiplayer battles tonight. I am still unfamiliar with a lot of the game mechanics and spells in the game. In the games I played, I used a standard empire lord with no spellcaster. My lord got sniped from some mysterious spell or from a griffon mounted lord shooting magic at me. And then my units routed. This seems like such a cheese move. At this point I feel like I may never get into multiplayer. So great work CA, a new player is completely put off by a cheese move with no knowledge of how to counter it that puts me at a huge disadvantage on top of being new. WTF were you guys thinking? Isn't this the kind of thing that gets picked up in beta testing?

The last total war game I played was shogun 2, I became pretty good at it, my clan was at the #1 spot for a while. The thing I really hated about that game was rear calvary charges to kill my general and end the game with no strategy. I hated it so much that I never attacked the enemy players general even when I had an easy chance to kill him, just out of the principle of it. I ended up dismounting my general and placing him in the middle of my infantry lines so they couldn't reach him until they had pushed through my entire army.

In any case, I feel that total war would be much more enjoyable for me if the death of a general had no impact on the rest of my army. I felt that way in shogun 2 and I feel that way now.

It seems like disabling single target casts on generals would be an easy fix.

Maybe its for the best you aren't part of the multiplayer.
