Hi, after updating Shogun 2 with the latest patch (13/05/2011) all total war games (empire, napoleon, shogun) have stopped working. I get the message:

IGameExplorer could not verify access.
Shogun2 will now close

This occures on empire and napoleon also. I have not changed any setting on my computer. The only thing I did was update Shogun 2. I have tried running as administrator but this does not help. Civ 5 does not have the same problem and runs as usual. Any help resovling this would be great. I have also done all the basic stuff I have read in the forums about this issue in other games trying to rectify the problem.....

any help would be radpants.

Regards, Matt.

Tried running the steam client with "run as administrator" ?

Try starting Shogun2 with "run as administrator"
    http://netsecurity.about.com/od/quicktips/qt/qt_run_as.htm

Using a "customized" Vista installation ? Probably missing some important windows files then. (See post #43)

    Hi mate,

Ive tried running as admin and doesnt change anything. Im running on windows 7 64 bit. The games were working absolutly fine until the recent patch to shogun2 was installed. now none of the totalwar games will start and i receive the previously posted message regarding "IgameExplorer". windows is fully updated. How can I make Igame explorer validate my games and why did they somehow "unvalidate"????

OK....I think that here is what your Igameexplorer is:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee417682(v=vs.85).aspx

NOW, I dont have a clue about that....I start the game via steam or my desktop shortcut. Never used a tool like this before.

Does the game give the same error when you run it from within steam ?

Could you perhaps post a screenshot of how you start the game and of the error message ?

Hi guys, in discussing this with each other, a dim recollection came back to me where once, I had this program limit my access because parental control groups, or the games in the lists for those control groups had been misplaced, wiped out, or redefined. While I cannot recall exactly what led to that condition, or what I did to rectify it, that program is basically a developer's tool and the only user interaction with it is usually to do with user groups and user group rights... parental controls. Although this was some years ago, iirc, I simply defined everyone as administrators and gave them access to everything...

    Hi guys.

I only have one log in and that has full administrator rights and as far as I can see there is not any parental control rights or such blocking my access. I wasn't even aware of igames explorer until it started telling me I couldn't play my games. I have usually just launched through steam or through the specific game shortcut on the desktop. Yesterday I deleted steam and all my games and reloaded. But it still comes up with the same message. Very very frustrated.....I just want to have the chance to be Shogun of a feudal empire.....thats all I ask.....

Tried running the steam installation with "run as administrator" -> that should definitely avoid conflicting rights manually.

Try making a new User Profile on your computer, make it an administrator. If you can run Shogun 2 from that profile we know that something has gotten dinked up in your profile permissions.

Just to make sure, you’re defiantly running Total War: Shogun 2 via the steam client library?

If you are and it’s still giving you problems, you can disable Games Explorer by navigating to your control panel and selecting Programs and Features. From that window, select turn windows features on or off from the left hand side. In the following window, untick everything in Games.

This should disable Games Explorer. Restart your PC and try running shogun via steam. If this doesn’t solve the issue, let me know.

Since this is happening to multiple games and the error sounds a bit Steamy (the IGameExplorer interface is probably a part of steam)

Is your Steam client up to date?

Just to make sure, you’re defiantly running Total War: Shogun 2 via the steam client library?

Nota Bene, this scenario is almost ALWAYS a parental controls issue, and several parts of the gizmo are required to be properly recorded for it to work correctly. Simply having the user in the proper access group may not be sufficient if in the process of an update verification of cache or other data alteration, some of the file links for Igame Explorer go missing. Here is an example of one person who by defining unambiguously NEW parental access control rights for the user or profile, made it work again:
    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2746227

To get an idea of why this might fix it or other options you could try, look at this MSDN article on Igame explorer and look sepcifically at the section "Adding a Game to Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 Desktop":
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee417682(v=vs.85).aspx.

90% of these problems are Parental Controls issues, but there _are_ about 10% that are either missing files (if you have a custom or unusual Windows version), have registry problems (virus, malware, or the aftermath of some Windows fubar-which it can occassionally manage all by itself), or your Windows is not activated, completely updated and legally licensed. In other words, if redefining either global parental controls or specific conrols as related to the user profile in question and the specific game in question does NOT solve the equation, its a file corruption/registry issue. Obviously if there is viral or cracked software activity, thats all she wrote until you address those issues. Otherwise could be, in rare cases perhaps disk space where a defrag and revierify will help, but m ore likley...hi-diddely-dee, a windows wipe and reload for you. Sorry,

Okay, I was having this same problem. first make sure Steam is completely exited. Not just top right exit, click on the button in the top left and then go to exit.

Then open up your start menu or your desktop icon and run right click. Here is the kicker:

    RUN STEAM AS ADMINISTRATOR!!!!

Messed around for a few hours trying to figure it out, and its the only thing no one tried.
