Varghulfs can take down a Gate thus saving you time to have to build a ram. Just have one less Horror unit so that you can have that Varghulf gate crasher for when you want to have a quick siege without the wait time.
Crypt Horrors are used to batter down armored infantry. At this, no unit in the VC roster beats them, but they are vulnerable to other monsters and halberds. Still, a very cost-effective unit even after nerfs.
Vargulf's biggest advantage is being a fast monster, so it can move around the battlefield crashing into enemy lines time and again, and it's pretty good against cavalry, heroes and other monsters. Don't let it get completely surrounded and your enemy will have a hard time killing it.
In SP, it can also destroy gates pretty damn fast.
The crypt ghouls are good don't think the vargulf is really worth it though. In my campaign I bring 4 crypt horrors and 1 vargulf - mainly because the vargulf heals and its pretty good for cheesing the AI with sometimes. I'd stick with the crypt horrors for MP but for SP you can make them both work
Some people don't enjoy the Strigoi theme. Ghouls are dirty denizens who don't even have the decency to be properly undead and to think that a vampire would share his blood with these low-lives to create an even more repugnant abomination is frankly beneath the status of a Von Carstein.
If ye be a Von Carstein then have a little decorum, Vlad would not condone the usage of such creatures.
A Blood Dragon? While the usage of any undead aside from vampires should surely go against your code of honour, these blighted creatures will bring ill repute to the name of Abhorash.
Lahmian? Those dirty mongrels really won't go well with your complexion!
Strigoi? Get out of my sight you low-born beast!
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE, MILK FOR THE KHORNE FLAKES!

So, out of curiousity, what generally is the make up of your armies with The Vampire Counts?
I don't play MP and prefer to make fluffy armies. For example 10 units of skeleton spearmen, 2 Varghulfs and 4 units of black knights. That's based on some wonderful artwork in the vampire counts armybook.
Generally though if I'm not making an army based on something in the lore I like a very Von Carstein feel - zombies, fell bats, skeletons and grave guard with a varghulf, some vargheists and black knights. Sadly we don't have spirit hosts so cairn wraiths replace those. And yes that is not the optimal comp and yes it's uphill without the crypt horrors and I don't really care.
In Total War there are two strategies at play. The campaign map and the battlefield. The better you do at one the simpler, easier and ultimately more boring the other becomes. The better I do at the campaign the better armies I can field, the easier and more boring the combat becomes. Sure, I won't handicap myself on purpose but I won't go for the optimal army comps either.

It's fine, I was just curious. I am not a big fan of MP currently either, I just don't see any sense in crying about it on the forums. MP clearly is not the focus of CA so soon after release.
So, as to SP army make ups, there is no wrong answer. There is only personal choice. I was simply curious about how you might make up your armies considering all you said that you wouldn't do. What you said you wouldn't do though was stated in a rather ambiguous manner, it was nicely stated but it wasn't very specific so I was simply curious for more specifics.
In SP, it is all about what matters to you and what is fun for you.
I agree with Aren. If I was playing seriously I'd use them because you can't argue with cost-efficiency and a solid unit, but in SP campaign I go for the Varghulf and various other units because I'm simply not a fan of the aesthetic.
My general makeup is graveguard heavy. I like ethereal units a bit more now. I haven't had a chance to really play with the blood knights yet, but am eager to give them a spin.
I feel that the significant use of zombies throughout the whole game is a bit self-flagellating though. Then again, I never liked the models in the old game either.
The thing with SP is that because the AI armies tend to be mid-tier you can have a lot more variety if you don't want the most powerful army. This is especially true with the VC. I tended to have varghulfs because they were fun more than because they were effective. They are effective though, especially in breaches and prolonged fights.

Crypt Horrors are the most cost effective things a Vampire can field. They got slightly nerfed, but they still are.

0 · Disagree AgreeThere are many ways to counter Crypt Horrors. They're really not that strong as some people make them out to be.
One of the best things about the Varghulf is its speed, it can keep up with cavalry and in some cases is even faster than cavalry and can catch them.
