Question for the people who play(ed) the tabletop

Tyrion1978Tyrion1978 Registered Users Posts: 51
1. What's the first race you play(ed), of those available in this game, and why?

2. Did you start TW with the same race?

And to answer my own question:

1. Greenskins. I love the randomness. If everything works out, nothing can beat you. If it doesn't, not so much ... but it's always fun.

2. No, thought it would be too hard for meto start with Greenskins (in retrospect, that was correct). I started with Empire.

    Dark Elves

I wish... fell in love with Tomb Kings later. Always liked the least played races, so many Empire and Orc players, had to be different.

Those races on tabletop were also imo, more challenging. Obvious weaknesses, unforgiving to mistakes.

I started with Lizardmen when i was 7 years old. Loved the dinosaurs and the Maya culture and still love it. Cant wait for them to come. Now i own a Lizardmen, Chaos warriors and Dark elves army.

In TWW i started with Chaos and Kholek but had much more fun in my 2nd Gameplay with Greenskins :) now i love the Orcs and play them all the time in multiplayer

1)played? High elves because my friend liked orcs and the other starter race was high elves, collected skaven

    2) no obviously I went for dwarfs to return me to my love, when younger, of big explosions and later super shooty wood elves.
    Team Wood Elves

    boyfights loves wood elves.

    1. What's the first race you play(ed), of those available in this game, and why?

    2. Did you start TW with the same race?

    1) High Elves. In part I chose them because they were in the starter set (4th? edition one with the cardboard cutouts of eltharion and grom). I stuck with them because I liked the aesthetics of the models though. And I guess I have a thing for elves in general.

I didn't necessarily love how they played in various editions/incarnations though, which caused me some small level of grief at times. But the game was always at least 33% about the hobby to me, if not more, so I was still happy. I'd rather be stuck paying for overpriced models I love with rules I don't than overpriced models I hate with rules I like.

    2) No (somewhat obviously)
2b) My first TW WH faction was Empire, as I felt they were a good main campaign protagonist. Then I did all the others. Have yet to get around to finishing on VC though.

Empire on both accounts...I loved big blocks with the detachment rule and combined arms tactics made playing them on the TT a very satisfying tactical experience. That is what hooked me and in the long run trumped 40k for me. If I wanted a fun, silly game pushing soldiers I would play 40k but if I felt like a real tactical challenge of feints and flanking counter charges I would play fantasy battles. For me that is why AoS hit so hard with it parroting 40k's shallower rule set. I'm so happy CA continued the legacy GW decided to destroy...granted the tactical depth is different from a TT to RTS conversion but I'm glad to see them trying.

    1. Orcs, I like numbers, lots and LOTS of numbers. Surrond and destroy the enemy. Also gaint monsters are alawys fun.

I actually played skaven but they are not in the game."Good troops" are over rated. You need a massive amount of "good enougth" troops and some weapons that cause massive AOE damange. "Freindly fire" is just a fancy way of saying "acceptable losses". Skaven logic=Fight 2000 humans with 8000 skaven. Lose 5000 skaven and win. That is a pretty good kill ratio in Skaven logic!

2 Skaven were not in the game. Still they reference them a lot so I am hoping out that they will eventually give them a DLC or expansion. Would be interesting, they would not be easy to implement but I think CA should try. Went with orcs instead, they were a lot of fun. Gobbo's are really good at eating grudge thrower shots for my boyz.

Dwarfs. I hated having my troops die, and I had played Napoleonic Wars war gaming previously. I liked the idea of you guys getting shot the hell up with not much happening in return....

So Dwarfs again. Still shooting **** up...

    TT
i started with dwarfs. learned i hate their playstyle. actually like playing them in TW tho

collected greenskins but didn't really play with them, same for chaos

played skaven - hated the randomness but loved how cool they are. also hated the wallet draining effect and massive assembly and paint task.

    lizardmen. love em.

then vamp counts was the last one. also enjoyed playing as them.

    2) i started with greenskins in TW, gave them up cuz i don't really like the waagh mechanic, then played dwarfs. alot.

Chaos! Loves me some spike tentacle.

I played as Dwarves first - the game was a gift (in exchange for some painting), and part of the deal was taking dwarves for a spin.

I started with and mostly played High Elves. After that I collected Dark Elves and Wood Elves but never could get the hang of playing the latter. There was always something so satisfying about destroying lesser races with the Elves. I was thinking about making a Lizardmen army but ended up going with DE and WE instead and thought a 4th army would be overkill.

In TWW I started a Dwarf campaign as a sort of test campaign, since I don't have my new computer until later this week. It was really fun and I was surprised by how well optimized the game was. When I can play everything with maxed settings I'm thinking of starting as the VC

Bretonnia of course! 5th edition starter set for the win!
Switched to high elves later, abandoned them in their awful 6th edition rendition (their magic was incredible in 6th edition but the units I liked (infantry) mostly bad. Not as bad as DE in 6th though... ) and later changed to dwarfs and greenskins (couldnt stant T3 generals any longer).

I still wish 5th editions colorful awesomness back sometimes but then I remember the cheese of a bretonnian lord on emperor dragon with 4 magic items... and then want it back even more B)
**** newer warhammer edtions for making the good guys character models so **** weak. If I want to have a monstrosly powerful empire lord I should be able to have one!

Question 2 is kind of a no brainer - no I did not play with bretonnia first... I am also not very fond of their looks in this game and the way cavalry is portayed.

I started with Orcs & Goblins, they came with the 4th edition starter set. My brother took the High Elves.

I also started with O&G in TW but this was not due for any other reason than I did an ip-dip to pick. I have all the armies in this game on TT so it was too difficult to choose

    1. High Elves - loved the professionalism and quality of the troops, then undead (in the days before they were split into VC and TK) enjoyed overwhelming the enemy with wave after wave of cheap units and using (abusing) the psychology rules, then Wood Elves with their mix of professional and guerilla units providing interesting tactical options.

    2. Started with VC, then Green Skins, then Chaos.

4th editions undead werent cheap though... they were pretty expensive pointwise...
Loved their uniquness and style though. Medicore (but frightening) main units combined with the most powerful heroes and some powerful special units.

Started with the 5th edition boxset, asked my parents for it for xmas, my aunty was with my mam when she bought it and got my cousin the set aswell. My cousin had no interest in it so gave me his boxset. Few weeks later a friend of mine came round and saw the boxsets and said he had 1 he didn't want. So in the space of a few weeks i had 36 Bretonian knights of the realm, 90 or so Saurus warriors, 100 or so Bretonian bowmen and enough Skinks to drive anyone painting stuff to madness!!

After that i started collecting High Elves, then went on to 40k and had a 6000 point chaos army, and a 3000 point Grey Knight army.

Sold the lot on ebay about 12 years ago. Few years ago i started collecting again, started a Orc and Goblin army (ended up with the Orc and Goblin v Dwarf boxset to start(not sure which edition it was)). its still sitting under my computer desk half painted.

I've never been 1 for playing, just really enjoyed the collecting and painting.

    1. Dark Elves, I bought some old Cold One Knights just because I thought they looked cool even though at the time my friends only played 40K, it started everyone buying and we ended up playing Warhammer almost exclusively

PS the old Cold One Knights look pretty awful now compared to the newer models!

    2. Vampire Counts because I was regularly using them before GW destroyed the TT game (yes I am bitter).

It was 7th edition. The strangest box set till 8th edition came around XD
The value for money in terms of miniatures was extremely high with lots of dwarfs and goblins but the goblins were near useless in 7th edition, the dwarf warriors (only warriors - miners and thunderers looked great) were some of the worst monopose miniatures GW ever did and no real rulebook was included... So strange.
Also way too much work to paint it all for beginners. It took even me as a veteran nearly 2 month with daily painting and using mostly base colors, inking and dry brushing on the goblins...

8th edition boxset had even better miniatures (they looked just awesome) but the armies were completely useless on their own and a really bad start for the hobby (gave you the wrong impression that small units of elites rule the game...) but great for people already collecting high elves or skaven.

*pops in* 1. My first in the TT was VC - mainly because i loved the complexity of some of the models

    2. definitely not! I went with something polar opposite - Dwarfs all the way!

    1. The Vampire Counts. Because i'm an evil, evil man. :p

    2. Yes.

    1. I started in 5th ed. with Warriors of Chaos. I didn't get much chance to play then. I switched to 40k for a while and did Eldar and Space Marines, but then stopped as well. Years later I picked TT back up and went Wood Elves but eventually got frustrated by the lack of a new army book (they were using a 6th ed army book in 8th ed, seeing many other armies get multiple books in between).

    2. VC. I always liked the models!

Played Empire starting back in 1995. Loved how they looked so different and weren't your standard "good guys." That was a looong time ago. I started off as a crappy painter but as I got older I became much better. Always proud that I didn't give up.

    1. Undead in WFB 4e (Vampire Counts technically) because the plastic boxed set was excellent value, and skeletons seemed easy to paint.

    2. Empire because they are my main current WFB painting project, and geographically are located right in the middle of the action.
  • OmuthOmuth Registered Users Posts: 246
I started collecting Empire back in the day. I don't really know why I just loved the imagery of men trying to carve out a piece of stability in this fantasy world facing off all manner of threats.

And yes... I played the Empire in my first few play throughs! I am now trying the dwarves which I always had a bit of a soft spot for.

Deep down I always liked the undead but I have never been much of a Vampire Counts kinda guy. I liked the Khemri undead much more.

I really love dwarfs and empire.

The models and fluff were what bought me in, interestingly seeing the empire fighting hard in the ET actually persuaded me to start playing them lol.

It may seem like heresy to many people, but I love seeing those arrogant vampires being given their just deserts by witch hunters :)

Yes in TWW I have already completed a dwarf and Empire canpaign!

I began table top 22 years ago with Chaos Warriors & Daemons
and Chaos Space Marines & Daemons in 40k

for Total War I started with the dwarfs as the suited my play style of massive artillery from playing 40k
But I have since fallen in love with the vampire Counts and Have played through their campaign 8 times now

If new comers to TT are acceptable ( those who felt in love with Warhammer Fantasy, because of this game ) then here I go:

    1. Dwarfs, because they are dwarfs. Ale drinking, hard fighting, stubborn and bearded Dwarfs :) Also Tomb Kings, because I need Settras aproval :) Wanted to start Bretonnia, but it seems their far to popular for a squatted WHFB race that I can some Bretonnian minis for reasnable price. I also got some High Elves too.

    2. Dwarfs since the other are not in or not finished yet.
