WHAT THE TOTAL WAR TEAMS ARE WORKING ON - UPDATED 16TH DECEMBER 2016

CA_ChristosCA_Christos Junior MemberPosts: 254Registered Users
Greetings - we'd like to bring you the latest update on what the various teams under the Total War banner are currently working on. This is part of a semi-regular series of posts which will briefly keep you up-to-date with what each Total War team is currently working on, and you can see a short summary on each below. There are some important things to bear in mind though:
  1. We can’t always say exactly what titles are being developed because games might not be announced yet, and we need to remind everyone that plans always change in development and that can lead to titles being altered, moved or even cancelled. So this post should always be taken as subject to change.
  2. We’d like to be able to tell you more about what’s going on behind the studio doors, and this is part of that, but if we see this is overly upsetting or confusing people, then we’ll drop it and think of something else.
  3. The studio staff working on each team varies over time as the production ramps up/down or enters different stages of development. Not all teams are equal in size, and staffers will move between projects as they are needed.
  4. I will update it as often as I can, and I might lock or heavily moderate the comments in this thread in the future, just so that people can see better when it is updated. You can always start another thread if you’d like to discuss the update.
So with that said, what are we currently working on?

Arena Team – Total War: ARENA
We were very pleased last month to announce that we’d be partnering up with Wargaming.net on Total War: ARENA, our free-to-play massed battle strategy game. It means we can go bigger with our aspirations for the project and bring our multiplayer-focused game to the largest possible audience.

The team have spent the last few months doing a huge amount under the hood with some fundamental mechanic changes. The series of closed Alpha tests we’ll be running over the coming months with the biggest players from previous tests are all the more important as a result, and will be a huge help in settling those new mechanics down and eventually introducing new Commanders and maps.

Wargaming will now be communicating all the latest news on ARENA, so while you’ll find all the big events here on our Total War sites and social media, you should head over to the Total War: ARENA Facebook Page and Wargaming’s official ARENA homepage for up-to-the-minute news.

Digital Team – Total War Battles: KINGDOM
As part of our vision for TWB: KINGDOM to be a Total War for everyone, everywhere, you can now play through Facebook, adding yet another way for you to access your Kingdom.

The team have also recently updated their previous game, Total War Battles: SHOGUN, to 1.5. An HD enhanced version, this update adds a bunch of visual tweaks to make more of recent hardware, including real-time dynamic shadows and post-processing filters, really elevating an already gorgeous-looking game. iPad Pro for Christmas please if you’re reading Santa…

Also in the mobile world, our good friends at Feral have released ROME: Total War on iPad, and it’s seeing some great reviews, if you haven’t checked it out yet, you can see some footage here.

Historical Team – Unannounced Total War Title
With production getting fully underway in the new year, pre-production for our next historical major release continues. Also, we have now partnered with our first historical advisor, pre-eminent in his field and already bringing that world-leading expertise to bear on our designs and extensive research so far. Unfortunately there’s nothing more to report this month that wouldn’t give the game away before we’re ready

It will still be some time before we are able to share anything specific about our next big historical game. The official social media channels, and the world’s press will certainly tell you when there’s more to reveal.

In related news, we’ve recently been looking at ways in which we might get back to historical content before we release the next major historical Total War, in particular thinking about additional content or standalones for some of our more recent historical titles. Nothing decided yet though.

New Content Team – Total War: WARHAMMER DLC and Free-LC
We hope you’re enjoying the recently released ‘Realm of the Wood Elves’, certainly now one of our most popular DLCs to date. While work’s been on-going with the designers for a while now on Bretonnia, everyone in the New Content Team will be moving on from Wood Elves to finalise that Race Pack for release alongside the Old World Edition in the new year.

On the future side, there’s a lot of discussions being had and scheduling being done around our plans for the second WARHAMMER game’s DLC, Free-LC and not to mention the early-adopter bonus, which will be one of the next things the team moves on to as we get into next year.

Warhammer Team –Total War: WARHAMMER trilogy
The sequel is now in full production, with the majority of CA staff on Total War working through the huge content plan for the second part of the trilogy. In the last few months, the art and animation teams have been decking the studio’s walls with incredible renders of our new models, and sending around vids of jaw-dropping animations.

As always, our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) have all the latest Total War: WARHAMMER news when the time is right.

    Excellent.

I look forward to seeing more stuff.

Going into Rome 2 from Shogun 2 was kind of a dissapointment.

    But, TW:W won me back.

I look forward to the next installment of TW:W.

    And, Medieval 3?

Please release more DLC for Attila! That would be amazing! Maybe an optimisation upgrade too?

I'm really excited to find out more about that new race pack coming for warhammer too!

Is there any plans to do more work on the current TW:Warhammer title in patches, or is the entire Team working on the second iteration? Can we expect anything more than bug fixes/balance updates?
(Like improved AI unit composition, better End game chaos invasion or fixing armies passing zone of control?)

Okay... we need to find whos the adviser is that CA has hired....

Also Interesting that we may not get a Lord pack in January.

Why not? A early adopter bonus (aka a DLC who you get for free for buying the game early after release not just before), seems to be more accepted and did the people complaining really thunk that the planets change direction because they don't like how they shadows fall?

If i understand correctly, there won't be more big DLCs planned for first game?

I also would like to know if with the release of Old World Edition, there will be an overhaul to the game (with a rework on core races, i.e. more starting position, tweaks on LLs and so on...).

You guys think you can go back and flesh out the Wrath of Sparta DLC? There were a lot of opportunities lost there.

At least add the sandals on the WoS DLC which for some reason everyone is bare footed.

This, except we have the advantage that it's Christmas every 6 weeks or so. It's so much better being a grown up!

First of all, let me say I'm really glad that you guys take the time and effort to give us even a little bit of insight of what's going on currently. Greatly appreciated.
    Also...
"In related news, we’ve recently been looking at ways in which we might get back to historical content before we release the next major historical Total War, in particular thinking about additional content or standalones for some of our more recent historical titles. You know full well that I'll buy it the second it comes out, IF it comes out. And I know full well that this isn't rational customer behaviour, but I'll still buy it immediately.
Looking at the numbers on Steam, still a fair amount of people play at least Rome 2 and new content might (hell - will!) make inactive people pick it up again. Given that Warhammer is a "live" title and R2 still manages to have 40% of the numbers in active players of what WH is achieving, supporting R2 might be a sound idea both financially and considering it's PR value. But of course - I'm highly biased. :D

This pretty much means no more paid content till Bretonnia comes out(february).

@ CA In the FAQ in the new Old World Edition pack subject (through the link above) you answer the following.

Q: Is anymore DLC coming for Total War: WARHAMMER? A: Yes, our next major DLC expansion, and the next Free-LC is due before Christmas. It is growing now, there will be more news soon.

Is this about is this about Realm of the Wood Elves or are you giving is a different Christmas present?

Ok guys, i like it that you tell us what you are working on.

Please never stop dropping DLCs and FreeLCs on any of your games. It is horrible that there is nothing new coming for Attila. Would love to play spanish tribes and so on. There should be the possibility for every of your games to play all factions. ;)

And please update Rome 2 with the familysystem! Please please please!

Last wish for today is...make Medieval 3 happen. And let me be in your creative-team!

Seconded. And I wouldn't mind if you announce either the 2nd Warhammer or new Historical TW soon. Even if its more than a year away!

We simply have to find who that historical adviser is. We have to.
Anyone who has anything to do with Time Commanders?

@Sughdian Warrior It might be an idea to complete your new registration by responding to the email from the registration process.

It's about time we got an update, thanks!

Interesting, I want to say we should know who the advisor is, but then we would probably be able to quickly determine the era the game will be in so....

I hope you guys do add something to previous games for us non-warhammer players out there while we wait for the next true Total War.

Not likely. But I wonder what time span we are looking at where where only 1 man can be enough to help ca?

There are historians that specialize in certain eras of course, but if the advisor leaks out, then it will likely be very quick to determine what the era of the next Historical TW will be (i.e. if the advisor is a specialist in China, then the next game will be Ancient China)

Well they said "first" advisor not "last", and they are still early in production.

Thou interesting enough they are thinking about to bridge the gap between the next historical TW with some extra contend for older Historical TW.

makes me think that my guess that they wouldn't bring a new historical TW during the trilogy most likely true.
  • WolfheimWolfheim Posts: 13Registered Users
The new content towards the older Historical TW games might be a hint towards the new era? if they upon up china, india and stuff on Rome 2 then it might be a pretty good first taste?
