All of the Total War games except for Shogun 2 are super cheap on GamersGate all week long. Thought I'd drop a link in here in case anyone missed some of the previous games in the series.
But I already ownz theze onez... and if S2:TW isn't one of the games on sale does this really belong in the S2:TW topic area?
Upon joining her first convoy at Plymouth, Periwinkle had the following exchange with a destroyer: "What are you?" "Periwinkle." "Can I stick a pin in you?" "No, I am a pale blue flower--not a shellfish." "Then I will come over and fertilize you." Later Periwinkle had the satisfaction of sinking the U-boat 147. (Nathan Miller, War At Sea, page 105) The Lesson here is simple, a corvette named after a flower is like a wizard in a dress, don't judge a book by it's cover.
jojo: GamersGate and Steam are competitors, so it is unlikely that your game code will work directly into Steam. GamersGate will give you a key to use with your download on your "My Games" tab on the website. Of course, Steam does allow you to import games purchased elsewhere to your Steam games list, so you shouldn't have any trouble importing it as a "non-Steam" game if you wish.
Bonfire: I figured it belonged here because most of the people on the S2 board would already own S2, but they would not necessarily own all of the previous games.
Somebody correct me if this is wrong, but Medieval II and Rome are not Steam activated games, so they will not require it. Of course as the OP stated, you can still add them to your Steam Library if you choose.
However, unless something has changed, both Empire and Napoleon require Steam for activation. This means that regardless of where you buy them (disk or digital download), one will still have to activate them through the Normal Steam procedure and they will become part of your Steam library.
Forward Observer: I actually didn't realize that the Empire/Napoleon required Steam. I can't run those games until I update my system, so it never even occurred to me.
Upon closer inspection, the following note does appear in the system requirements for those two games - Note: This product requires a 3rd party download and account. It seems reasonable to assume that this is a direct reference to Steam activation.
Long story short, the answer to jojo's question should have been "yes."
