I was thinking about the next total war game that may be coming down the pipe. While I would love either Rome 2 or TW:China. I kinda had a Idea about a ww2 North Africa game. What do you all think about this as the next or just a future TW game. It would allow for a simple change into more modern war, it would still take Calvary (tanks) into large value. There would be a small problem with understanding where units are coming in from which iv been trying to work out since the units are not being produced in the area. However, I think this would lead to great game play, mine fields defensive MG and AT positions instead of forts, Tank assaults and Battalion or company size units to move around the field. So I will stop blabing now and see what you all think!
There are games that do WW2 quite well. I think the most immersive TW games have been pre-gun powder.
I really think the edge of this series could effectively cover is pre WW1. Tanks throw off cost vs output by a large margin vs infantry until the era of current era ATGMs made by many modern counties. But this is just IMO.
The level of complexity of the modern warfare would take away from what "Total War" has represented. Having tanks, minefields and most of all Airplanes would make the battle too complex and very very hard to manage. There are a lot of good RTS or TBS games like Panzer General or Sudden Strike that can cover battles of WW2.
If you want a really good tactical level game, Combat Mission is the way to go. It is totally lacking in the strategic aspect, it models infantry, tanks, and Artillary quite well. CMx2 which covers a modern era game CM:Shock force, and just released a WW2 era CM:Normand. CMx1 covers most of the ETO and Africa but only does WEGO, a hybrid TB system. CMx2 does WEGO and RT.
I agree it would have to be handled with care and ww1 would make a good stepping stone for trying more modern war, but the slowness of ETW and Napoleon was seen as boring. So I thought skipping past it to a theater of war in which was like what you have with medieval combat but with ranged weapons would work better from a fun stand point. I love RTS games as well such as Company of heroes or Starcraft, but there is the missing element that TW brings which is the campaign map. That extra layer makes so much of a change in how the game is played is incalculable.
Since you don't like the Idea I set forth, what would you said you would want first, China or Rome. Hell even another era maybe Pre exploration Central/South America. We could also make a true Alexander game or even a Full Crusades game which isn't a simplified expansion.
So vote is, China, Rome2, Americas, Alexander, Crusades, WW2 Africa (could do more than that maybe the pacific could work better). Which would you all like to see next.
One way to have a ww2 work in TW would be to have Artillery and aviation attack from the campaign map and do some sort of autocombat on the enemy stack and after that you could go into the battlemap and fight with troops and tanks.
But what would make these things hard to implement is the fact that back in those days frontlines were very big and the idea of stacks can't apply.
Battlestations:Miday/Pacific was one of my favourite video game depictions of WWII as a sort of tactics/strategy/action hybrid. A pity the studio is defunct, I wanted to see them try their hand at incorporating land combat into their solid naval/air gameplay.

The naval battles would be epic, though.
Another way you could add Air and naval bombardment to the battle is threw general abilities much like we have now in shogun2. Have them on a long timer son you can only use then maybe 2 times at most during a battle and have a timer before they happen so you ahve to forsee where the enemy will be.
For the TW series, North Africa might work with an extension of the French Foreign Legion, in it's early days. It would need to be a part of a campaign series that would include the Zulu Wars for Britain and the East and Sub-Saharan Africa subjection by the Euopean Powers of the time.
There was a lot going on in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia at the time as well as South America liberation wars. Lots of good material for a Guns and Powder period.

I agree
The battlestations games where very good, pacific was a more arcadey let down even with its better graphics but still fun.
Theres also a few other half decent games out there R.U.S.E can have its moments and the game Order Of War is pretty good.
Personnaly for ww2 I like hearts of iron 2 and its spin offs (darkest hour and ****nal of democracy)

I have never retreated in a strategy game, I just attack in the opposite direction.

Yes please! (I like Quotes I am a lazy Keyboard Technician)
WW2 would be pretty good and I would be Extremely excited by a WW2 total war game. But the main thing for me right now is that they need to choose a different part of the world and make a game. I am tired of Europe. If they made a game on north Africa or Africa alone I would be happy. Anything but not Europe or Americas or Japan.
