Crash to desktop for friend when we try to play Vortex campaign

Whenever me and my friend try to co-op Vortex his game crashes to desktop in the lobby screen as soon as he joins. If we host a Mortal Empires game however it works just fine. We are on the same build, we have all the same DLC's with the exception of him not owning The Queen and the Crone DLC.
Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on what it could be or suggestion on how to proceed to check what might be the issue?
