Bretonnia Campaign - Legendary

Bretonnia, revisited.

So intrigued by the campaign and strategy of Bretonnia. I choose to once again take up arms as King Louen Leoncoeur, and uphold the virtues of chivalry and to unite Bretonnia. To also mete out justice to those of evil intent. I've turned all my cosmetic and camera mods off, as this will be an unmodded stock vanilla only game. I wish to truly complete this and enjoy it without the chances of increased crashing or problems due to using mods. As seen in some of my previous games.

So, here we are, King Louen. Proud, bold, and chivalrous.

Opening move:
I move our army close to the border of Marienburg, and recruit three units of spear-men at arms, and a unit of bowmen. I also begin construction of a stables, which will help me gain access towards more powerful knights and paladins, but will allow me to recruit yeomen archers and cavalry. I also embed our damsel to our army, her lore of heavens abilities will help much.

As chivalrous knights, I begin researching the chivalric code with a path to knowing the ways and threats of the unliving. The knowledge gained from this will help me fight the undead, and finally lay them to rest.

I will also use the commandment: Venerate the Lady which will increase our control of the region.

My opening strategy:
To ignore Marienburg and destroy the Skullsmasherz, and take or raze, Grung Zint. To then replenish, and then knockout Marienburg from the war, or to totally destroy them.

The army of Merienburg has retreated back to their capital and the road is now clear for my march and attack upon the Skullsmasherz and their town of Grung Zint. I immediately march and attack, and I will fight the battle to its bitter end, and even if I am wounded in the attack and my army destroyed, Marienburg will finish them off.

In a costly, but decisive battle. The Orc army is smashed, and they now have no hope to regain their former power, and retreat what is left of their shattered army. I take over Grung Zint and begin recruiting more spear-me at arms. My stables complete, I begin construction of the livery that will enable the recruitment of stronger knights and paladins.

The remnants of the shattered Orc army attacks me at Grung Zint. They are easily dealt with, but have further depleted my army in a decisive victory. The Skullsmasherz are no more, and justice has been done. I recruit Lady Ilyse Paravon, of the lore of life school. The lady's abilities will help much in the coming battles, and I begin a mass recruitment program to both my armies. I need soldiers and archers and I need them fast for my vision of a decisive strike and knockout blow to Marienburg.

My various negotiations with other dukedoms of Bretonnia are paying off. Securing trade agreements and non-aggression pacts will help a lot, and help my economy, of which I aim to build Couronne, into an economic powerhouse to begin with.

With troops pouring into both my armies. I feel I am ready to deal a two pronged attack upon Marienburg. Marienburg forces have still not reacted to current events, and I am thankful for this. Agents have reported that Marienburg have recruited more units at the capital.

My armies nearly ready, although it will be be a bit more difficult, but I know my knights and I can pull it off. I order the construction and expansion of Couronne which is now growing rapidly, and I recruit more units to both my armies.

With the construction of the fields complete, our income increases. I launch my siege upon Marienburg, and my second army under Lady Ilyse, has marched from Couronne to join my assault, and the attack goes in.

My battle at Marienburg is over, and it was intense. I am victorious! Although the battle cost me dearly. I have sacked the city, and then captured it, in-case a counter attack retakes the city from my heavily depleted armies. The extra gold will help the construction and expansion of Couronne and L'Anguille.

With both my armies now at Marienburg, the threat of Orc incursions has increased. I order the guard strengthened.

After replenishing my armies, somewhat, and recruiting more units to my armies. The taint of undeath is spreading across Lyonesse. I can't help my brethren and hope they stand strong, as my situation within my own realm is not secure. Vanheimlings have declared war upon us, and we must remain vigilant. I order more lookouts to watch the coast for invaders.

I order the construction at Couronne of a tap room, which will help us maintain control of our region and surrounding provinces. My agents report the undead have taken the city of Lyonesse. I mutter under my breath, "The Red Duke must be stopped." My livery nearly complete and my realm expanding. It is still dangerous around the countryside as incursions are reportedly increased. The taint of undeath is spreading rapidly, and has led to the undead climbing out of their crypts and graves around Grung Zint and attacking the army stationed there.

In an unexpected attack by the undead, it almost cost me my army and garrison, but they fought off the undead and lay them to rest. I have ordered a guard to be placed on all graveyards, and my agents look in to reports of a necromancer near here.

Recruits continue to pour into my armies.

Kemmler! Has attacked Marienburg and wiped out my new army that was stationed there. The undead, now control the city and Lady Paquet has been killed in its defence. With the livery now complete and further expansion in progress. I listen to the reports coming in from Marienburg.

I hearby declare an errentry war against the undead. Powerful knights errants from all over Bretonnia, flock to my banner. A holy war, has begun! With both our armies now heavily overstrength, and it is costing us more to upkeep them. I rush to strike at Marienburg, and prize the city from the grasp of the dead.

At a furious pace with a sound like thunder, our armies clash at Marienburg.

    Battle of Marienburg.

Thanks to the previous battle of Lady Paquet, and the completion of the deaths grip decree. Our armies stormed the city and re-took it. All undead, have been returned to the ground, and the area consecrated. I now begin a massive recruitment order, of the Knights Errant.

With the battle of Marienburg over, and our armies continue to secure the region. The forces of Marienburg, who're camped at Gorssel, have asked for peace upon hearing of our holy war against the undead. The war between us, is over.

Couronne, now a town and bustling with activity, recruits from all over Bretonnia and beyond flock to our banner. I secure further non-aggression pacts with Marienburn and Carcassonne. I also enter a military alliance with Artois and Bordeleaux, both of which vow to join our holy crusade against the undead.

With the construction complete of our weaving house at Couronne, and with our various victories and spoils. our coffers no longer buckle under the weight of our armies.

With the spread of undeath around Marienburg and Grung Zint increasing. it will tie down my armies for a time. As I order the further construction of defences of L'Anguille. A small army, led by Lord Ingrund the Savior, now helps secure the region and watches the border with Mousillon, which is strangely and deathly silent.

As I coordinate the holy war against the undead. We declare the target of Lyonesse, to be the focal point of our war for Bordeleaux and Artois. While I contend with Kemmler, who appears to be quite active within the region, but it seems, contained, as war between the undead and the Crooked Moon gathers pace. These Goblins have reportedly captured Gisoreux, but Mousillon has captured Castle Bastonne, who is no more.

    Norsca, makes landfall.

In a bold attempt at invading Bretonnia. Norscan forces have landed on our shores of Couronne, and one more small army is heading towards Marienburg. The first army, led by Sortsvinear Ek, appears to be quite well trained, but lacks heavy infantry and ranged units. In a small skirmish with his forces, Lord Ingrund's small army were defeated by the much larger force and had to retreat to the capital, but not before inflicting quite some losses upon their forces with our archers.

I order Lady Ilyse's army to immediately attack the Norscan force, while I defend Marienburg and Grung Zint. The Lady's army now has four units of knights errent, and they will perform well against the Norscans.

    Rising of the Dead.

A small undead force rises near Grung Zint, but my army destroys it and puts it to rest. I know Kemmler and his agents of death are behind this! The Dwarf armies of Karak Ziflin, have now also declared war upon the Barrow Legion, which is what I hear Kemmer calls this new off-spring faction of the Vampire Counts. I make a non-aggression pact with Karak Ziflin, and they tell me tales a legions of the dead marching against their brethren and karaks in distant lands.

The Dwarfs are stout, hardy, strong in will, armour, and thick heads. They would make a good ally in our holy war against the dead, but the Dwarfs are reluctant to enter into pacts with others, and they distrust us much.

Lady Ilyse's army fights with the Norscans, and causes them to retreat. In a close battle near Marienburg, my army defeats the second small army. Although, it was a bit costly, both armies now flee to their ships and head back to Norsca.

Relative peace, but the taint of undeath is spreading and the undead - rising. I destroy another small undead force near Grung Zint, and begin to apply my talent in the skill "Devoted of the Goddess", which gives better knowledge in removing the taint of undeath. My tap rooms and hostelry will also do much to bring control to my realm and beyond.

I look at plans to construct a "Grail Shrine", but will be some time before I can begin its actual construction. My armies, still heavily over-strength in order to face any threats of the undead or Norscans. The Orc problem seems to have died out, when they lost Grung Zint.

    Kemmler and the Dead.

Kemmler, has been spotted near Marienburg, again. The dead are rising at Grung Zint again, and my force put them down. With my armies losses increasing and harder to replenish due to the taint of undeath that permeates the region. Kemmler, has brought a large force, and I order Lady Ilyse's army to return to Marienburg.

It will need both our armies to stop this powerful undead legion.

Various building upgrades and fortifications around my realm have been completed and our realm much bigger and better for it. L'Anguille is coming along nicely, and the fortifications will help much against the undead of Mousillon.

I have ordered that funds need to be saved for the construction of our "Grail Shrine", which will aid us in our holy war against he undead.

Norscan forces have been spotted out at sea, led by Wulfrik the Wanderer.

Battle of Marienburg (one of the most intense battles I've ever had).

Kemmler, sieges Marienburg and my army defeats the smaller undead force near Grung Zint. Athough I lost some units in the battle, my knights errant are proving invaluable. Mine and Lady Ilyse's army backed by the garrison attacks Kemmlers undead legion; and we're almost annihllated! With Lady Ilyse nearly killed in action, and both of our armies and garrison almost wiped out by the undead legion. We camp at Marienburg and begin recruiting more to our armies which will be needed. Wulfriks Norscan armies are getting closer.

With Kemmler wounded, and the remnants of his legion retreating back to Blackstone Post. We prepare to receive this new Norscan threat, and I wonder what horrors Mousillon are also gathering together for us, for a large force has been spotted near Mousillon, and I pray that the armies of Bordeleaux and Artois, who're close, take them on.

    A drought hits Couronne.

Our fishing harbour at L'Anguille has been completed, and it will bring much needed growth and income to the region, since Couronne is still plagued by drought. Grung Zint is now a village and I begin constructing a guard house. Also, our improved agricultural tools will help our farms around our realm.

A small undead rising happened again at Grung Zint, but was quickly put down. Our soldiers are getting very experienced at fighting the undead, and Lady Elyse now has a war horse. I make trade agreements with Bordeleaux and Carcassonne. I also enter in to defensive alliances with Paravon and Marienburg.

Norscan armies led by Wulfrik the Wanderer have landed near Couronne, and begin to raid our land. I anticipated this and for some time now, have been reinforcing both of my armies. I order the immediate attack, and one of Wulfriks armies is destroyed and Wulfriks army, now heavily depleted is forced to retreat to the coast. Before I can destroy it, they retreat once again back towards Norsca.

I make a note, to invade and raze Norsca to the ground.

Another small rising by undead forces near Grung Zint. They are becoming easier to destroy now that my force is better equipped. Our trebuchets, can be quite decisive. The legion, led by The Red Duke that was spotted near Mousillon some time ago, now appears near Marienburg, and I order my army to march there. Lady Ilyse's army, still camped at Grung Zint, await our signal. It will come soon. For this fight, Lady Ilyse has recruited more units than necessary, but they will prove decisive in the coming fight.

My armies attack the legion led by The Red Duke, and in tough fighting, we destroy the legion and wound The Red Duke. This was a good victory for us, and the proceeds taken from the spoils will go towards the building of our Grail Shrine. Though, we do still lack funds. The Empire, has confederated Stirland, and they're now stronger for it. As always with such things, I send our kind regards and continued friendship. Public order across my realm is increasing and things seem now more secure.

A waagh from the Crooked Moon, who it appears I am not at war with is heading this way and nears Marienburg and is raiding the area.

I recruit more spearmen at arms, and I will have to fight them. Their army is not particularly strong, but both my armies are smaller, having lost units from previous battles.

The Goblin army of Crooken Moon, has been wiped out. Although, I did lose a few units of men at arms in the battle, I did take a talisman: "the seed of rebirth", from the dead general, and it will help Lady Ilyse, as it gives regeneration. Kemmlers legion has been spotted again near Gisoreux, and Mousillon legions are raiding Bordeleaux.

The taint of undeath around Marienburg and Grung Zing is subsiding. Our skills in removing it are improving, and it will not be too long before we have buildings that can do the same.

Beastmen continue to raid and siege Castle Carcassonne. My forces would not make it there in time. My prospects for their survival are slim. Kemmlers two legions now move towards the Empire. I may intercept one of their legions and destroy it. The proceeds from the battle would perhaps begin constuction of the Grail Shrine. Mousillon's legions continue to raid Bordeleaux and still hold Castle Bastonne.

I begin to draw up the crusade into Lyonesse region, with the aim of securing the city and purging it and Mousillon of undead.

As if undead spies know of my intentions. The Red Duke offers peace and what desires I may have, eternal life, power, and all the things these vampires and lesser people crave. Peace, is an interesting proposition, but while he extends his arm, Kemmler attempts to bite mine off at the elbow! Kemmler, and his two legions now siege, Marienburg.

The forces of darkness are not to trusted, and Castle Carcassonne is now ruins. Put to rest, they must be. This is why the war is a just war, and why The Holy War - continues.

For reasons I cannot fathom. Kemmler, and his two legions lift the siege, and march back to their capital at rapid speed. I immediately go on the offensive. Skarsnik, of Crooked Moon has been very active. Raiding Empire and Bretonnian dukedoms lands. I am to smash his main army now camped at Gisoreux. I attack and although my own army is virtually destroyed in the assault. I wipe out his entire army and garrison. I then sack his town.

The reason for this action: I cannot afford to let Skarsnik link-up with his two armies that now rampage Empire lands near Eilhart. They're now much weaker, and poorer for my actions, and the proceeds have gone towards the construction of our city at Couronne, and further expansion of Marienburg and Grung Zint.

Kemmlers army has been discovered camouflaged by the trees at the pass to Gisoreux. One can only guess what he is up to. His other legion, seemingly destroyed by unseen forces.

I have secured a trade agreement with Middenland, and I have now a non-aggression pact with Clan Angrund. I will continue to seek allies and strengthen the economy in my ongoing errentry war with the undead. Also, in a surprise move, Vanheimlings offered peace. I took it, for now, but I will not forget so easily what they've done.

So much, has happened. As I write this from my bed, wounded. Let me begin how it came to be.

It all began in a daring and bold plan of action to deliver a knockout blow to Kemmler, but first, I had to delay Mousillon. As my two southern armies at Marienburn and Grung Zint. They fought hard, and they hung onto the settlements. Fighting tooth and nail in bold actions, our Grail Shrine was finally complete! The undead legions, had failed to stop it.

Invoking Gilles le Breton, and the Lady of the Lake. I called for a Holy Crusade against the undead legions and their masters of evil machinations. And so, it began. With powerful trebuchets, our knights errents, our glorious archers and battlions of foot soldiers. We marched on Lyonesse.

The garrison, was not prepared for our lightning attack, our trebuchets saw to that. We then sacked Lyonesse, of almost 30,000 gold. The proceeds which I knew would come, would come to fund the second phase of my plan. The plan, to stop Kemmler. As my army marched to Artois. I confederated them. The Red Duke, now caught off balance by my plan, and their severe loss of dark income and recruitment options. Mousillon, sued for a peace I counted on. It came, and I accepted! Kemmler, now cut off from his ally, was left out in the open, sieging Marienburg.

I replenished my forces at Artois, and immediately marched on Blackstone Post, and the attack went in.

Kemmlers garrison destroyed. I sacked Blackstone Post for over 30,000 gold, and then captured it to make sure it was destroyed, for I know the vampires and undead would launch and uprising, and they did. My army, too weak to stop them, they razed the city, which I counted on. I was wounded, but knew someone else other than Kemmler would colonize it, and they did!

Kemmler took Marienburg, fought for Grung Zint, but the forces of Norsca clashed with his and they almost wiped eachother out. Norsca, has retreated, and Kemmler, now left with a minor settlement, a broken army and Marienburg! A wreck of ruination, of constant war and destruction.

The Grail Shrine glows a bright and warm light. The lore of heaven surrounds us, and our Holy Crusade has only just begun!

    Holy Crusade: Marienburg.

As our knights fight battles against the undead all over Brretonnia. My army recaptures Marienburg, and all undead are put to rest. The area consecrated. We begin to rebuild and bring life back to this forsaken city. Although it was a costly battle. Kemmler, is getting weaker and weaker, and its showing in the quality and experience of his legions.

My next target will be to recapture and reinforce Grung Zint.
