Large Battles break the game when played manually

Just started a new campaign with a buddy and every time we try to play a battle with more than 20 units
the game will load in the battlefield but no units ever show up, and the game just leaves us in the
deployment phase indefinitely.

Smaller unit counts seem to load just fine without any errors. We have been forced to delegate all the larger battles so far
which is frustrating, as playing battles is a large part of the Total War franchise.
