This. Please CA fix the forum and say something now and then.
Technically, CA outsources the forum development software to something called "Vanilla" https://vanillaforums.com/en/software/

And if you're referring to the bumping thing, just sort via "Hot" rather than "New" or "Top."
    Nobody does that.

It can't be that hard to fix the forum. It's been like this for around forever.
I do it all the time. It's literally two mouse clicks. And if you hit the back button from a discussion, it'll take you back to whatever "sort" you were on before you clicked on the thread.

Players on reddit aren't "nicer". Outside of times when things are really really bad it's merely a big pile of white knights who are aggressive towards pretty much everyone who says something negative about CA.
I still remember when a certain reminder on reddit went to the front page on a regular basis, even people who complained in a calm and non-insulting manner got "attacked" by those "nice players".

Reddit is pretty ridiculous. You get downvoted even if you point out that there's a bug. It feels like you're offending their parents directly or something.

Personally, I'd have appreciated even a message that went along the lines of "development is continuing, but we can't yet say anything conclusive." Just as a sign of courtesy.

However, I know that there are some people who would be absolutely rabid over seeing an update and then clicking it, only to find there's nothing new there.

    So it's a tough choice.

The most simple reasons is that they consider it an hassle, because they suspect most declarations won't be nicely received. Sure they get a lot of flak for very subjective elements (ahem Cylostra) but then again, do they often try to justify the direction they take ? For instance they said the team was quite fan of the pirate concept, which is why they went for the coast, it may rub the lore purists the wrong way but at least if was a explanatation. Since then it's mostly silence.

I for one would pretty much like to do how they will handle cross content in the future, regardless of the actual minutiae of TWW3 content itself. But no, those things are "taboo"

Honestly I don't get why they care about what they say being badly received. Whatever they say it will always be badly received by a part of the community anyway. And if something is not received very well by a majority of the community then maybe they should question themselves instead of just going radio silence.
  • uriakuriak Posts: 3,421Registered Users
Well, the most telling thing for them may be the reception at large, and this is often quite nuanced. For instance, it's been said (and looking at some previews reviews on generalist game sites it seems very likely ) that non hardcore fan are put off by the number of DLC. This runs completely opposite to most opinions here, because we long for more content in general.

Same for VC coast, that VCoast was a minor faction, which character they brought for it, didn't amount to much compared to the overall reception of pirates + zombies in total war.

But, with this stated, we end up with many valid complaints about bugs or campaign features that don't get much momentum. They don't need to explain themselves about it, because their efforts are geared toward the larger community in moments when there is actually content news coming.

CA has by far the worst community managers I've ever had to endure. Might as well not exist at all with how useless they are. What are they getting paid for?

And doesn't "refresh" the forum at all.
So you're back to where it was before you entered the thread and have to refresh yourself. Not to mention that the "back button" goes to more and more mouse-clicks the more pages of a thread one reads.

I mean, I created a bookmark that sends me to "General Discussions - Hot sorting" and placed it somewhere I would reach it fast, but that should never be necessary for something that's actual standard procedure as well as something people usually expect and wish from a forum instead.

There are workarounds, yes, but as far as forum design goes it's just bad and an unnecessary hassle.

I just wish CA would be honest instead of delaying things , they don't keep to their timelines, and when they abandon or know they will be late with something , they don't address the community. Dispite them saying they will try harder to communicate and be more involved with us

I have a question about total war forum on reddit. I've heard there is succulent drama pertaining to 3K risque character depictions. Can anyone tell me what happened exactly? Trees whisper CA community managers are involved in it.

live edit, fresh, made while creating this entry, yummy:

    Apparently those are CM's comments

That's it, I'm staying off the subreddit for a bit.

If you guys can't understand how weird and uncomfortable it is as a female community manager to see every main female character in our game reduced to standing around in her underwear then I'm not sure what to tell you.

Just to be clear - I'm not making an ultimatum here. This is a community run platform and so users can share what they choose to.

I'm just saying that these images personally make me uncomfortable so I'm going to take a break from here. Any other community-run platform sharing similar images would also have our official presence reduced.

I guess thinly veiled ultimatums are more important than communication.

    edit2:

It worked, said reddit subforum added new rule against risque content.

    edit3:

    Different CM comment

Just to clarify, the issue wasn't just one employee being personally uncomfortable (Which is still important, doesn't matter who you are you shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable in the Total War community), but as Creative Assembly we don't want to validate things that go against our policies as a company. We're not trying to stop you posting things but we have to be wary of our company's reputation when it comes to NSFW content, IP conflicting content, etc. I don't think a Community Manager choosing to step away for a few hours whilst that kind of behaviour dies down is in any way censorship. We don't own this community, it's not official. Our forums are official and we have deleted this type of content on there, but it's up to the mods what threads are acceptable on this Subreddit. Peace.

But then CA includes Witch Elves, Sisters of Slaughter, Morathi and Hellebron who are no less 'NSFW' than fanart of Sun Ren, cause of all the drama apparently.

I think that the difference is that the community never treated dark elves ladies as sexual objects, but simply as warriors who happened to fight naked. As far as I know, there were no creepy posts about them. Of course, they were first introduced by GW in the 80s to please pretty much the same kind of people that now like sun ren's pinups, but the total
war community seemed to be pretty chill about them. I actually like the new rules of the sub, because I think it should be about a strategy game and not soft porn.

Anyway, this whole drama just shows how much that sub is biased. Something offends a staff member? Rules get changed. I think the feedback from the sub is not really reliable at this point. They will always praise the developers no matter what they do.

There were lustful comment. That's DE thing after all, excess in all shapes and forms. One of the reasons some flock to them. Personally I see no difference between Sun Ren in a bikini and Dark Elf in a bikini.

Reddit moderators bending the knee is given. I don't post on reddit, I don't plan to. My post serves only as highlight for CA's quality of communication and priorities.

But now I'm curious how CA will approach Slaanesh units, posting their concepts and cinematic reveals. I sense hypocrisy and mental gymnastics or worse, some units won't be released.

@Grace_CA being uncomfortable about it is something I don't understand. She has a problem with naked Sun Ren but things from CA's game are okay ? And even if it makes her not comfortable it's strictly personnal, she is on Reddit because it is what she's paid for so making a drama about it is very unprofessional, that's part of her job so deal with it.

Also she said it was flood but there was actually only 3 posts about it with one being drowned by downvotes which is the one she commented. And there is a NSFW tag, so if NSFW makes her uncomfortable then why the hell would she click on it ?

Oh and speaking about Grace, she is paid to be a community manager but I can't think of her being present at all on these forums, actually, she's barely present in any platforms and it's kinda ridiculous that the rare time she interacts with the community is just to make a goddam stupid drama.

From what I gather and what I have seen Sun Ren wasn't even naked but in underwear.

One of those posts received a lot of positive points. Apparently local community didn't mind it.

Corporate modus operandi in situation like this dictates to claim victimhood. I can already see article being manufactured. In few days we will learn from Kotaku/Polygon about angry consumers sending vulgar, abusive messages and threats to CM. Those who will even slightly criticise CM shall become villains in the future.

And now that particular reddit subforum will turn into even bigger joke. As if it was not awful enough. They have already started to remove even legit questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/c2pmob/solegitimate_question_when_it_comes_to_warhammer/. That's enough reddit reading for me.

It's not the first time CA's CM act in unprofessional manner. Communication is not only lacking, it's hostile.

I recall a thread where some people complained they were not sexy enough because of their sixpacks. You can probably imagines how fast that one derailed.

What happened was that since 3K came out, and to a lesser degree since WH2, "nsfw waifu posts" started to pop up on the subreddit more and more.
I have hardly seen any, but from what I read they either were removed rather fast by the mod team due to "a mountain of reports and DMs to the mod team" or never received many upvotes.
Due to my personal aversion towards the Total War subreddit's moderation team I will take everything they say with a big grain of salt though, since they are known to exaggerate in such manners (similar to how CA CMs tend to concentrate way too much on "negative stuff" from the community), just like the people who usually defend their decisions/CA and those updated rules in every possible way.
    Posts must be SFW.

Posts & Comments Reported as: NSFW Content.

/r/TotalWar is a SFW subreddit, therefore, all posts must also be generally SFW. Nudity or other overtly sexual content is not allowed and will be removed at the moderators' discretion."
Now I'm not a fan of "waifu posts", but I also certainly don't mind them. It's in the nature of games, books, etc. If there's a character it will receive some "sexual treatment". Though I would have liked to see the response if the male characters would have been the ones to get the "waifu treatment".
The issue with this rule is that "CA/GW sanctioned" NSFW content, be it sexually (none of the "waifus" were actually naked, but just scantly clad) or with heavy gore/blood/violence is ok, while fan created stuff is going to get removed.

Not to mention that 3K was designed with the Chinese/Asian market in mind. Waifu posts and all that comes with it were to expected from the get go.

This statement from a CA CM (which one was it btw? Would be nice to have links to such stuff...) is quite funny.
A CM stepping away from a community, even if only for a short time, because of certain stuff may not be seen as direct censorship, true. BUT it actually incentives the mods, admins and members of said community to change their approach to the situation and enforce it in a way that CA is fine with, if they want to keep the CMs posting there on "a regular basis".
Also, their reputation? As they said, it's not an official outlet. Come on...

Reddit has the NSFW tag and the upvote/downvote feature so that communities can filter or avoid such posts. In addition there is/was (I think I remember it not working with "new reddit") RES, which would allow for more direct filters.

That the mod team looks like they're just "bending the knee" creates a dangerous situation for a "fan community operated platform".
It's nice to see though that they are actually receiving some backlash from a part of the community.

Reddit drama should stay on Reddit. This whole mess is embarrassing and further proves the point how there is absolutely no meaningful discussion to be had there.

This is just false. While I can't speak for the threads about the historical games or 3K, there have been really good discussions for the WH series about the game, lore and whatnot. At times it was even way better than here.

Also, while reddit drama should stay on reddit, the reaction of Grace/CA is relevant to the topic.

About this forum : people may filter with HOT, but this not being by default, effectively makes most threads beyond the first page quickly wither out beacause most people don't even see them.

About reddit, feeling Grace did probably a misstep by going personnal. The case is quite different from warhammer content - I'm not too optimistic about slaaneshi stuff but GW themselves reigned in their own design. In essence, people sexualized content that was not, repeatedely. I even see the case for CA to be wary of it, because it could clearly change what their game is associated with, aka the thousands of softcore asian games stuff.

I wanted to draw a DA/Slaanshed themed fanart and posted it there, there wouldn't any issue, I think, unless I stated in it I wanted to make a point.

From my point of view forum is more alive when CA stuff is active. I remember last time when we were discussing something like most favourite units. It just felt like CA is sharing their passion with us. And there is something special about it.

I know that they don't like to comment on any "what is next" threads. But I believe they might join us on topics when they can add their experience let's say with campaigns or factions or maybe lore.

It's all just so overblown. "Someone said this!" "What!? Get the pitchforks!". It really reeks of drama for drama's sake. That's fine, but there's no need to drag the drama from there to here. It just becomes people waving their flag.

CA more often intervenes there, but still not much.

Honestly we are here for a bit of news and fun among ourselves. What was the last time any CA member dwelves on campaign mechanics, faction or roster suggestions at all ?

The examples are so few that we almost know them all "yes we'd like to rework amber on day", "we are keeping the most difficult updates for last"...

It is overblown but unfortunately it is overblown by CA's own CM. Look I work in customer service and I can say 100% that the current CM is unfit to lead the community if this is all it takes to ruffle her feathers. The communication on WH's side was lacking to say the least and on 3K side there is overblown silly stuff. Perhaps CA should find someone with a backbone and that actually engages with all of its communities.

That was given. Asian setting and new format of character art that can be easily overpainted beg for animufication. Some Koreans boys did what is popular in their region and judging by their mmos bikini outfits are most definitely popular. If CA don't want to be associated with wetness then they shouldn't play in the water.

Whether Sun Ren in bikini or Lu Bu in speedos, I fail to see the problem. There is whole branch of cosplay set to make normal outfits risque. I'm not a fan of waifu mods but some like them and the ones posted on reddit were made well enough to show them or just present as curiosity. Pretty harmless.

Also I'm looking for confirmation. On steam's forum someone mentioned that there was twitter TW poll about most handsome Warhammer character in the past. Is it true? Link would be welcome.
