Why are Ranked Battles played in Romance mode?

EstrelaGalizaEstrelaGaliza Posts: 3Registered Users
I don't understand how can ranked battles work with romance. I mean, ranked battles are about strategy and tactics... And there are no strategy on using general abilities to smash 50% of the opponents army while he is trying to round you from a better position, what is useless against magic heroes with super powers...

Don't misunderstand me, Romance mode it's a nice addition. It gives another dimension to the campaign mode, and players who like it can enjoy their own private multiplayer romance battles... But let's think a little... No one will play competitive ranked battles at TW MOBA style. If you want to play ranked MOBAS there are a lot of games for that, but if you are looking at TW ranked matches, you will probably be looking for a strategy battle.

Welcome to the club, mate. Me and a couple of others ( the first was @romin_ronin ) started in week two after release to say this exact same thing. i say this over and over again, but seriously this gets stale now.

nobody from CA listens, it is just not on their radar. too busy with DLCs and bug fixing which is not a bad thing, but ...

an elite coder could change this in one single minute. at least this hilarious combos of 3 Xu Chus should be made impossible. or have you seen 3 karl franz recently? or three lord kroks???

+1000 to every thing you said

Like already mentioned in other threads. How about an answer CA. Ignoring the issue through lack of communication is not the answer!
3 Kingdoms is a great game campaign wise. Make ranked battles in Records mode. Until that is done it won't be complete.
Gun Cav in Shogun II should have a Retainer!

I'll give you an honest answer. Since it's multiplayer, it probably wasn't a conscious decision, since multiplayer in almost any TW is completely barebones and hasn't been given much (or any) thought. Still enjoyable in some cases, but barebones.

CA also has 'fans' who cry and rage whenever something is done for multiplayer because 'they' (the single player only players) are 'the true fanbase that helps them pay their bills, and they should focus on giving us free updates instead of putting time into improving multiplayer'. I literally have seen people making this argument on this forum when the Steps of Isha maps were released for Warhammer Total War. True words.

I certainly agree with you guys. I would've been tempted to play this game for the multiplayer because it seemed like it could be balanced and more about tactics and less about abusing mechanics than Warhammer, but seeing that it was Romance mode put me off it.

You are correct. However there are people like myself who enjoy both.

Sure Viking, sad but true. Adding insult to injury: the new playmobil kiddo mode (dynasty) has better rules than the main MP mode! (you cannot choose three of the same characters). Arrgh.

I don't mind the romance mode. This game was built around characters, having larger than life characters that can wipe out whole enemy units on its own is what this game is about.

I don't mind having a separate ladder for record modes though.

Just because the campaign was built around it doesn't mean it's balanced in anyway for multiplayer. The massive disparity between Generals and regular units in Romance mode is completely insane. You can get 3 of the best Generals and pit them against the 3 worst + a full army and the 3 generals you picked would DESTROY the entire enemy army without bring a singular regular unit of their own.

Romance Ladder can be literally summed up with whoever has more generals alive after a general vs general fight. Currently there's nearly 0 reason to bring any other units to the field since they're so utterly irrelevant to the outcome of a match 99% of the time.

Personally I think Romance mode is also to powerful in SP campaign. The fact that with a Vanguard or Sentinel and 2 champions + maybe a couple cannon fodder units in campaign I can win basically every battle on Hard/Very Hard just by gen sniping and dive bombing enemy units is insanely boring and takes no strategy, no tactics and no forethought what-so-ever. You actually don't need to get better units or really recruit much of a retinue at all so long as you level your generals...

This is actually the worst MP experience for TW I've ever had, and that's impressive considering I remember the horrible desync bugs Rome 1 had in battles on LAN connections, or how horribly unbalanced FotS units were on release vs base Shogun 2 units.

Oh and it's funny that the "Best-selling" TW of all time and is the most recent TW has less than 50% of the regular player base of Warhammer II

    https://steamcharts.com/app/779340 Three Kingdoms
    24 hr peak = 11,372
    30 Day average = 7,799.8

    https://steamcharts.com/app/594570 Warhammer II
    24 hr peak = 24,669
    30 Day Average = 17,931.0

And when you count actual play time in the last 30 days you also realize that Warhammer 2 has better player engagement.

    WH2 Hours played 10,089,848 ; 30 day Average Player Count 17,921.6
    so 10,089,848 / (17,931.0 x 30) = 18.75 Average Hours per month played

    3Kingdoms played 4,121,195 ; 30 day Average Player Count 7,799.8
    so 4,121,195 / (7,799.8 x 30) = 17.61 Average Hours per month played

The only reasons I can think of WH2 doing so much better in both player number + player engagement and DESPITE literally less people owning the game and it being older by nearly 2 years AND 3 Kingdoms having less active players than WH2 has ever had since after it was actually released are Unit/Faction variety and the fact the Battles are just straight up 1000x better in Multiplayer and still significantly better in SP campaign battles.

Despite 3 kingdoms having sold well it is a player engagement failure as it's still continuing to drop and will likely be below Rome II and jsut above Medieval II in just a couple months time barring no massive rework is done.

    @Comanglia

I cannot quote you here, because the post would get too long. :D

Yes, yes and yes and again yes. The steam numbers are alarming and show that a multiplayer scene is essential for the success of a game in the longer run. Although I presume that most of our chinese friends had to change from steam to wherever. idk. does somebody know this better than me?

Romance mode and MP are in no way comptible. First mistake. I mean c mon: the top 100 of the ladder is a freaking joke! no strategy to be found there at all.

Second mistake, not responding to player feedback. Patch 1.3.0. looks promising though. I cannot test it because i cannot find a game, but this will improve when it goes official. At least no more three Xu Chus! cheers
