Vanilla's going to like this: warp grinders might be testing the waters for ogres

Greetings,

So if I understand this correctly, warp grinders will be given the ability to actually bore through walls! This is the first melee unit that will be able to do so. I had been thinking on how they were going to do siege battles for ogres (since almost all of them are large size) for a while now, and it seems that the warp grinder hints towards the solution in a major way: some ogre units might be able to just smash walls in melee.

This wouldn't be the first time that they test some unit mechanics before releasing it again later: think of deck gunners being released just before jezzails (there are probably more examples but I'm tired so none come to mind).

What do you think? Does the addition of warp grinders open up the possibility of more units being able to melee walls?

    Weeeeeeeee!

I'm still hoping for Ogres to climb walls. I'm also hoping for a maneater that uses a Warp Grinder too. Smashing walls does sound fun though.

I think the easier solution for Ogres is to let Monstrous Infantry climb walls... Otherwise, why even bother with walls against Ogres?

the issue with monstrous infantry on walls is simple: due to their splash damage etc. Walls would end up as liability as soon as they are on them. the troops are so pushed together that even counter units likely would get slaughtered.

Guess why we can't use wind spells on walls

That and the fact, that winds and vortexes don't adjust for altitude..

But regarding the spasl damage, it would be dangerous to face them on the walls sure. But given that the monstrous infantry are fewer in numbers, and lose their charge bonus... Then I am pretty sure that the waiting Spearmen or Halberdiers on top of the wall will make short work of them any way..

if you reduce their numbers, even if you keep the health the same, everything that is strong against single targets will get stronger against them.

Maybe some existing monster will get that ability as well. This can unlock opportunity to make even bigger monsters than Dread Saurian. We will know for sure after they release patch notes. Right now model size is limited by gateway.

I am saying they are fewer in numbers than general infantry..

I think most ogres with a heavy weapon could worry your average settlement gate.

Any unit can currently attack gates, so that wouldn't be particularly unique, and it would still leave the Ogres bottlenecked at gates.

I think that splash damage affects a set number of enemy entities, not all enemies in an area.

yea I reckon they should remove that any unit can damage gates and leave it for the monsters and specialist units like miners.

Yup. That's why the Queen Bess with a Gunnery Wight is hilarious in sieges.

And why I’m looking forward to the mortars.

Also, wouldn’t some monster attack animations cause them to take flying leaps off the walls, killing them instantly?
