I come to ask: what, aesthetic wise, is your favourite unit in the game?

Something tells me they aren't going to appear so quaint and cute when Warhammer 3 rolls around. Seriously they have the potential to be one of the most brutal armies to face.

Yes, in fact this Spiky Pig was made with your request in mind.

One of the Tomb kings monsters. Hirotitan, or tomb scorpion maybe. I’m a sucker for constructs, be they golem or steel.

Spiky Pig? Do you want to be sent to the mines?

Imrik might not be the same as Caledor II, but you certainly are

    The final rose has faded,
    The eaves will sing no more;
The waxen ground will keep you bound,
    Death-pale until the thaw.
Then she placed the rest of Orion's ashes into the bowl and turned to face the Oak of Ages.
I used to go by many names here. Crazycrix, Dubinekdubajs, Yrellian and finally Ariel, one of my favourite characters in the setting. Still waiting for Finubar and Naieth!

Weirdly enough, I think I'd go with the Coven Throne. I just loved its mix of gothic elegance, opulence, horror, and grisly efficacy.

Waywatchers and Sisters of Avelorn rank high up there, too.

All the artwork I've seen of them makes them look like anti-semitic propaganda from nazi Germany.

From their aesthetics they are clearly Assyrian and Babylonian. Thats also represented by their beards, names and their religion based on fire.

not only their aesthetic. I've read some rather horrific stuff about what the Assyrians did with some of their enemies. Of course not all of that has to be true, but it could've served as an inspiration.

I remember reading once of one Assyrian noble who had his home decorated in flayed human skin...
The Empire still hasn't gotten their FLC LL. We need Marius Leitdorf of Averland!

Where is Boris Todbringer? Have you seen him? For a Middenland DLC with Boris and the Ar-Ulric!

Every wrong is recorded. Every slight against us, page after page, ETCHED IN BLOOD!

Queek could smell their hatred, ratcheted to a degree that even he could not evoke in their simple hearts. He stepped over the old orange-fur’s body, eager to see for himself what it was they saw. But he heard it first.

I think it's interesting that Assyria was the first Bronze Age nation to have a professional standing army who could train and fight all year round. so I assume violence became an important part of their civilisation.

No can do good sir. It’s either Dawi-Zharr or perhaps Bull-Zharr. But if you keep using those names, you’ll be in a mine before you know it.

Putting elves in the mines? Those pointy ears are way to weak to even hold a pickaxe, better use those weaklings as house slaves.

Aesthetic wise? I will have to swallow my dwarf pride and admit that dragon princes are my favourites. I don't like elves in general but their aesthetics are really beautiful.

Their whole religion of fiery bulls, human sacrifice and demon binding is clearly inspired by the Canaanites and other pagan nations detailed in the Old Testament, just notched up to eleven with fantasy effect. The Assyrian and Babylonian trappings are just meant to to cement that vibe, even though the cultures are quite different.

Tolkien's dwarves do have some thematic symbolism harkening to Jews particularly in the medieval period though. Nothing nasty of course, and the goofy depictions of Dawi Zhar from earlier editions are just par for the course for GW, nothing targeted unlike certain other short humanoid models.

Not only do the Chaos Dwarves, High Elves and Dark Elves also have Assyrian and Persian influences: Asuryan, their long robes, mixed formations of archers and shielded spearmen (in the case of the Dark Elves, crossbows and spearmen: the old TT rules of the city guard), LSG is inspired by the Immortals, the cruelty and sadism of the Dark Elves, etc.

HE and DE are fantasy Greece from the classic era.

DE are Sparta and HE are Athens.

That's part of it, but there are a lot of influences going into the Elves. For instance, the intricate politics, greataxe-wielding imperial bodyguards drawn from a location which is seen as politically impartial, and the general style of the High Elf army, pointy helmets, and scale armour are all Byzantine. (You won't find any period where Byzantine skutatoi look exactly like a High Elf spearman, but most of the individual pieces are there across different periods).

Games Workshop themselves have compared the Asur-Dawi contrast to Southern versus Northern England.

One of my absolute favorite in game models are the Minotaurs. Their TT models were complete trash and the redesign CA gave them is awesome.
