1) if epic sold 200mln free copies that would mean an investment of a couple of billion which a highly doubt. This would mean that the average price per claimed free copie is significantly lower which would also be reflected in the result of ca.
2) the number of owners of different total war titles are not comperable to Troy as Troy will reach it’s sales peak on the first day being for free while the other titles have had multiple months/years to reach those numbers. Troy sales will drop dramatically in the weeks after It’s initial launch as it’s not for free anymore and it’s epic exclusive. This is also the reason why I think it will fail if one would only look at the p&l not taking into account other more qualitative factors which could also been seen as successful.
We don't know how Epic deals look like, and I personally doubt that they have paid for each of these 200 mln free copies. I guess that it is more like, ok - we are paying you for such number of copies (minimum guarantee on sales) and additional % of additional copies which were claimed for free.
If epic users log into in it, in similar way as Steam users on Steam, it means that around 50% of monthly users will login daily, so it will give around 40 mln daily users and the first thing they will see on 13th August is that Troy is free. How many users can try it?
When GTA V was offered for free (for a week), its monthly active playerbase has doubled. On steam its estimated active playerbase is around 4 mln players, so in theory around 4 mln epic players tried out GTA during the month when GTA was free for a week.
Similar stats for free Civ VI. It was also offered for free for a week. Its active monthly playebase has risen for over 477%. On steam it is estimated that its active playerbase is around 1.1 mln of players. So, in theory around 4 mln epic users claimed (some might have bought it later) and tried it.
So, in case of well known brands like Civ or GTA is is very possible that around 4 mln users might try it in the month they were offered for free.
If these 4 mln were mostly people who claimed it for free during a free week, it would mean that around 500 000 users might claim a free game on one free day and play it.
Considering that Total War brand is rather famous (for example 3K active playerbase on Steam is bigger than Civ VI active playerbase on the same platform), so I would not be surprised to see Troy reach 250 000 - 400 000 peak of players (number of owners might be even higher) during its first free day.
Also, Troy will have two peaks - Epic peak and Steam peak (where of course Steam one will be much lower).
4) the overall public opinion about this title is already mixed with positive sounds around the campaign mechanics but some serious criticism around the battles. And let’s face it if the battles suck the game will suck.
I would say that it all will depend of critical reception. If it will have only "warm" (it had like 75 on metacritic while other games were around 85) reception like Thrones, it might not draw more players.
Still, the Epic Store is most likely to give Troy the bigger playerbase than Steam.

Ajax and Diomedes. Not surprised, because, as Rafi had pointed out, they were the next in the end turn line. The big question is if there will be more. That seems rather doubtful about the Achaeans (from the well-known ones, only Nestor remains), but there could be a Trojan pack.

Mods rather influence retention of players, not the sales. I would say that it all will depend of critical reception. If it will have only "warm" (it had like 75 on metacritic while other games were around 85) reception like Thrones, it might not draw more players.
