Sisters of Twilight campaign give up Avelorn?

Currently playing the new Sisters campaign. Despite winning almost every battle I am finding it hard to move away from the witchwood and settle the other forests. I just gave the Vale back to the High Elves cuase I didn't want more enemies when I can barely hold together stack and a half.
Any tips? Did I make a mistake giving away Avelorn?
