Shogun 2 closes to desktop when loading battles

Hi guys,
I have an issue where shogun 2 closes to desktop as soon as the game tries to load a battle. meaning:
on the campaign map, when i click "start battle", the game will close when the map loads on the loading screen. it closes when the loading is around 20-30%.

during custom battles: as soon as i finish setting up units for both teams and start the battle, it closes instantly.

so far I have tried:
Vsync off and on, both failed
using direct x 9 and 11, both failed.
reinstalling, didn't work.
all mods are unchecked.
Nvidia drivers are up to date.

Any tips?
