I still think it was a missed oppurtunity by GW to support chaos cults as an offical army, both in 40k and fantasy. Chaos is primarily supposed to be a corruptive force, that gnaws on mortal weaknesses and vulnerabilities. That turns well intended deeds on their head. Turns real passion into perversion. Virtues into vices.
But chaos main contribution to any warhammer force is not an internal threat, but a force of armoured dudes showing up out of nowhere and smack you in the face.
Cultists are very elegant, I would like to see them as an base infantry for Tzeench.
Cultists with crow masks and robes are much mor thematic than what we have in AoS, the Kairic Acolytes bodybuilders with little clothes and crow masks.

I really like the Warcry warbands getting to dig into different varieties of cultists.
(Though obviously they're more extreme AoS-y than something that would fit into the Old World.)

Yeah, if you could mash the Corvus Cabal and Cypher Lords together you'd end up with some pretty amazing Tzeentch cultists.

Yeah but it is still to little to late. So much more could be done with them. E.g. in fantasy you could have a variety of cults, from soldier fraternities tl aristocratic circles, which could come with a wide template of units. Mutants, demon hosts, darksouls and more (basicly cult of the dammed from mordheim expanded into a proper army) together with corrupted state troops or fallen knights. And this could come in versions for each chaos gods too.
Not to mention the stories to be told. Think for example of the story potential of an revolutionary movement in nuln or altdorf that starts with genuine good intentions, but bit by bit is more corrupted without the rebells realizing it until it is too late.
Not to mention what could be done with a chaos cult army in 40k. The possibilities there are really endless. 40k once had a cultist/heretic army but sadly discontinued them jn favour of CSM.

Absolutely. The lack in 40K is especially egregious.

"I shivered at the sight of her - her beauty far beyond that of mortal man. But her soul glowed with an inner darkness that chilled my very core."
