Further information from my side after trying it again and having the same result....and after reading the sticky ;-)

    Build:
    v.1.7.0 Build 16713.2221481

    Detailed description:
Game crashing directly after the loading screen before the battle begins or few seconds into the deployment phase.

    Reproduction Steps:
Initiate campaign with Cao Cao (190 date) and in the first battle it happens.

Details of any solutions that have already been attempted:
Verified game files, unsubscribed the TWO mods I was using, deleted mod folders from hardrive,....fresh re-installation of the game.

No "crash_report" file is being generated at all.

Sorry for posting again, but should I contact Sega customer support directly or will I receive an answer?

    Hey Insomnia1337,

Could you attach the save files that affected? Have you tried the Beta 1.7.1?

When you are loading the game is it detecting the correct graphics card? You have an onboard laptop card Citrix Indirect Display Adapter <-- this has an out of date driver, so might be worth updating this too! =)

When you did the fresh install have you removed everyfile to start from fresh? (You can copy save files to a new location and back, but nothing else or it could have an affect) =)

    Thanks!

    Dear Charlotte,

    thank you for responding.

I will give you a short update and answer some of your questions:

    - It happens in custom battels aswell, so the problem is not attached to the campaign gameplay. But if you wish I will initiate a campaign and send you a save file of turn 1, just before the initial battle.
    - I have tried the beta and I have the same problems, currently I am opt into the beta.

---> Should I opt out of beta, if I send you a save file?

    - I will update the onboard laptop card Citrix Indirect Display Adapter asap, but the graphic card is recognized correctly by the game when I go into the options menu.

    - To my knowledge I have deleted all the data from my SSD before I did the re-install. I deleted savegame files & mod folders (I had just a camera mod and a hero rebalance mod).
    -
--> Are there other folders I am unaware of which I might have forgotten?

I will come back to you with the requested data and let you know if the update of the onboard laptop card Citrix Indirect Display Adapter helped.

    Best regards,
    Insomnia

    EDIT:

    - Opted out of Beta
    - Citrix driver updated (It is a workspace driver from my wife to work from home =D ... I guess this has nothing to do)
    - Save game added before crash

--> I will uninstall the game again, as I think that there might be some folders I forgot to delete the first time.

    EDIT 2:

After a fresh install again....and deleting all files and foldes (I was in doubt if i did delete everything the first time).....I have the same issues

I really hope you find the problem and fix it.

    Hey Insomnia1337,

    I'm still looking into this!

When you try playing can you try setting the graphics to the lowest setting and see if you can play the battle without it crashing? if this works try increasing the settings gradually until it occurs again!

    Thanks

    Hi Charlotte,

I will try it and give you feedback.

    First feedback:

Today the game was updated to the new patch. So I tried it without changing my graphical settings.

I initiated a CaoCao campaign in 190 and in the first battle the game crashed to desktop.

    -----

I set all graphics settings to the lowest and I initiated a CaoCao campaign in 190. For the first time I could finish this battle.

    -----

I do not have time to test more today by changing the graphic settings,... but I will give you further feedback on this topic and really try to have a systematic approach, in order to identify exactly what is causing the problem.

This is still in progress and I hope that the solution will not be to play the game in low settings...because my hardware should be able to run this game pretty decent....so let us see what will happen

    Hi Charlotte,

I had the opportunity to test more and I think I have found the issue....still there needs to be done more testing from my side to finally confirm that this was the issue.

    Here the story:

I have initiated some campaigns with CaoCao and custom battles with 4 full armies on a siege map.

Step by step I manually upgraded the graphic setting to the point where everything was ultra + extrem unit size.
I had no crash.....of course on the siege battle with 4 full armies the framerate went down with this unit size.

I then switched to recommended graphic settings, which are ultra + large unit size, and suddenly I had a crash to desktop in campaign and on the siege battle.

So I was comparing what actually changes when I run with the recommended settings and I noticed that for whatever reason the brightness is changed from 50% to 60%....this is the only change which was different from my step by step approach by manually upgrading the grapic settings.

I like a lot of soldiers so I normally play with ultra unit size as frame drops are not that notizable with my g-sync monitor and obviously I am playing a strategy game and no fps ;-)...so no need for constant +60 fps

So the issue seems to be the brightness option, whenever it is above 50% of brightness...Maybe it drags to much power or I don`t know what the issue might be.

What I will do next is testing the brightness option with lower setting to really verify if this is causing the crash to desktop.

Maybe you can give this feedback to the programmers, so that they can also have a closer look at it and verify if there actually really is something wrong with the brightness setting.

I also want to call out other players suffering from this constant crashes if they can try it out by changing the brightness to a lower degree and give some feedback below this post.

You will hear from me in the next couple of days.

    Best regards & take care,
    Insomnia

    Hi Charlotte,

The game keeps crashing, not on each single battle though.

I tested further with the brightness level but there seems to be no direct connection to this option as I looked more detailed.

I am not finding a pattern on this problem.

I can only think about some issues with the current GeForce driver, even though it is up to date.

I will try to disable GeForce experience and let you know.

I fear that this game will not receive any more patches and therefore I will not be able to play it anymore.

I will come back to you as mentioned,

    Take care,
    Greetzi

    Hi Charlotte,

I have to give up. I did not have the time to test it recently....but today was the day. I initiated a campaign and it just crashed to desktop on the first battle.

I hope that these issues get adressed in future. Unfortunatelly, I am uninstalling the game right now as the game for me is in an unplayable state. My drivers are up to date and my system should be more than capable to run this game on high....

If you wish, you can close this thread but it has not been solved.

Half a year later I tried again and I hope that this time around I found a solution that lasts longer than just 1 or 2 days.

    https://forums.totalwar.com/discussion/281067/very-frequent-crash-to-desktop-during-battles-and-sometimes-on-the-campaign-map

The thread above helped me and stated the following solution path:

    Delete Preferences & Cached Data

Try going to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\ [NAME OF TOTAL WAR GAME] and delete the following folders:

    army_setups

    battle_preferences

    fx_cache

    ui_cache Scripts

At least I could play the game with ultra graphics (how my system is supposed to run the game), but I had to delete the battle preferences file(s) 2 times.

Is this a known issue? Is there a possibility to tell the game it should not create any files under this folder?

Maybe other users who are struggling can give some feedback if this worked for them.

These files are intended to recreate fresh versions of themselves when required after you delete them. It's just a way of clearing out all the old information and resetting the contents.
