WH2 already has a mechanic for the Greenskins that is identical to that of the Armorer and Blacksmith from Medieval 2, where you can use scrap to upgrade Greenskin units, while the changes aren't visual like in Medieval 2, they get better stats.
Certain factions like the empire, Brettonia and the High elves could use this feature for some of its units, especially the ones that have shielded and armored variants. You have for example the regular spearmen and then you got the shielded ones, who are all the same but one has a shield and the other doesn't and this just unnecessarily inflates the roster. Instead of treating the shielded and non shielded variants as separate units, the shielded one could act as an upgrade the the regular version. For example, if you have a Armorer, you could have the option to upgrade your High elve archers with light armor, give the lothern sea guards the shields and give men-at-arms units also shields instead of throwing dismissing them and recruiting the shielded ones everytime.
I really don't understand why the game even has shielded and unshielded variants when people will always go for the shielded one whenever possible. Its not like they are that expensive, the price difference is minuscule at best. The moment you get to recruited shielded spearment for example, the regular variant becomes obsolete.
