Kroq-Gar Thematic Army

Hello everyone,

I like having thematic armies, and I would like to know what army composition would be recommended for Korq-Gar.
I don't know much about his lore tbh, but from his description and his Lord effects I'm guessing it's a core of Saurus Warriors + Feral carnos + Stegadon/Bastiladon.

Any recommendations?

A core of saurus warriors and cold one riders. In lore, he lead a lot of ambushes against Daemons, with a particular focus on the use of cold one riders. His armies would likely have included all sorts of units, as he's the top oldblood, but Saurus would be the focus.

Early on you'll be stacking up Saurus. His combined upkeep reduction will give you a powerful early lead, and you'll get a second stack up and running right off the bat. When actually leveling up though, make note that all of Kroq-Gar's lord effects actually buff the big dinos. Lean into that. Red line for a monster mash and field a 20 stack of SEM based around those bonuses in the long run. So Saurus early, monster mash late.

I love thematic armies, too! Actually my next entry in my Thematic Army series will be the Lizardmen; I'm hoping to do it tomorrow. Kroq is going to have Saurus infantry with Cold One cavalry and dinos, mostly Carnosaurs, but I haven't finalized it yet.

Kroq-Gar doesn’t have a thematic ‘army’ per se, so much as a thematic playstyle.

His most notable lore is that Xhotl fell under siege by Chaos forces. When it became apparent that the city’s defense was no longer tenable, it was Kroq-Gar who broke through the lines and let the population out to safety.

However, Chaos pursued them deep into the jungles of Lustria, which turned into this giant cat-n-mouse campaign of Kroq-Gar retreating, then ambushing, then hiding, then sabotaging, then falling back. His army was a motley crew of an entire city. He likely had a little bit of everything at first, and used what he had. This likely included Skinks and Kroxigors and anything else.

However, this is where Kroq-Gar’s theme kinda shines through….. he didn’t really know when to quit. Whether it was a Spartacus thing, or a Captain Ahab thing, or something else, Kroq-Gar KEPT attacking Chaos. Even after he could have taken refuge in other cities. Over time, his entire army was either killed, or decided to call a new city home. But not Kroq-Gar. Him and Grymloq continued to wage a 2-lizard war against the Chaos forces in Lustria, until they found themselves fully surrounded. Kroq-Gar and Grymloq saved each other’s lives numerous times during this campaign, and developed a special bond, unique even amongst Lizardmen. But their persistence almost doomed them.

Ultimately, it was Mazdamindi who led an expedition outside of Hexoatl to rescue Kroq-Gar, and rewarded his martial prowess by making him the head general of Hexoatl’s armies.

^From there, while Kroq-Gar is appreciative and loyal to Mazdamundi, and does his bidding, (again, using whatever army is provided him), Kroq-Gar seems to relish any excuse to be ‘let-loose’ against Chaos. Him and Grymloq have fought on every single continent doing Mazdamundi’s errands, and thwarting the various plans of the Ancient Enemy. But they are known for leading armies off in far away lands, on the hunt. NOT standing sentinel on Hexoatl’s walls.

So a Kroq-Gar campaign is not ‘thematic’ for the units that you choose. It’s ‘thematic’ for how you fight it. Which is to say ‘there are no brakes’. There’s no turtling. There’s no ‘waiting for the AI to initiate a siege’. Especially if it’s against Chaos. You’re going to constantly sally out, push forward, ambush, and hunt, casualties and pragmatism be damned. You can still be smart about it. Kroq-Gar knew when he could only pick on weaker targets and when he had to retreat. But his retreats were just to give him enough space to plan his next attack.

So he’s not a ‘Slayer’, who constantly seeks the most powerful opponent possible. But he is aggressive, persistent, and more willing to fight deep in enemy territory rather than sit on a defensive front at home.

^Play him that way, with any army, and you’ll be playing a proper ‘Kroq-Gar’.

Kroq-Gar is the closest to Cavalry Lord you can get as Lizardmen. His army should include a lot of Cold One Riders/Horned Ones.
