I really like them myself. Makes the units look a little cel-shaded.

Yes, it's good that it's optional. Things like this should be yet some developers force these visual elements on players with no way of disabling them. I know a few people have voiced concern on the green icons on the minor settlement battle. Hopefully these are optional as well.

Like it as well. It gives them a bit comix look which i don't like but a higher benefit is that they don't visually blend so much with background.

Haven't decided how I feel about them yet. I fear they may stick out too much, but they may help make things look less messy when big blobs form. Happy to know they're optional.
