Bretonnia's absence and its future in Game 3?

Cosmic_Lich#1188Cosmic_Lich#1188 Registered Users Posts: 748
TL;DR: I'm guessing that GW possibly asked CA to hold off on Bretonnia in Game 3. This would give time for GW to give Bretonnia their Old World update so they can cross promote it with a CA DLC pack for Bretonnia.

I've been thinking about the distinct absence of Bretonnia on the Game 3 maps. Though there are other races that are missing, such as High Elves and Tomb Kings, Bretonnia is an odd case considering that it's right around the corner. It seems so easy to simply extend the map to add Couronne and L'Anguille. At least Bretonnia would be present.

Bretonnia's absence could be a case of allocating map making resources to more focused races. They were simply excluded to save time.

Or.

I'm guessing that GW possibly asked CA to hold off on Bretonnia in Game 3. It seems odd to exclude them in the map when they are so close to it. Map making resources could make one major and minor settlement map for Couronne and L'Anguille and be done with it until Mortal Empires 2.0 is released, but there is not one Bretonnian faction; not one Bretonnian map.

If you love Bretonnia as much as I do, then you are probably are excited for Warhammer The Old World, GW's reboot of the Fantasy setting. Bretonnia, as us Bret fans love to repeat, has been left behind in 6th edition tabletop. Most, if not all, other races at least have a 7th edition army book. So Warhammer the Old World, or 9th edition as I'd like to call it, is the opportunity for Bretonnia to get its much needed and desired new army book. Updated lore, new magics, new units, new characters, etc. If Kislev and Cathay are being developed for Warhammer the Old World, and they seem to have a higher fantasy than previous editions, then it is possible that other races will get this higher fantasy treatment.

My claim and argument has two points.

1. A jump from 6th edition to "9th edition" must bring a lot of changes. 6th edition has been explained as a very restrictive edition to lore and roster and that was that edition that Bretonnia was left behind in. Whatever changes that happen to Bretonnia might be drastic enough to exclude them for now so they can be properly updated later.
2. Such an update would ideally give CA enough content to make a full DLC with. This would allow for GW to cross promote their army book and would allow CA to sell a product. Simply, it is in the best interest of two companies to have something to sell.

So I'm guessing that GW has asked CA to exclude Bretonnia for now. It's also possible that CA simply decided to exclude Bretonnia themselves, so Bretonnia can get a big update and DLC when the time comes.

Do you think this is a plausible hypothesis? Or do you think I'm setting myself up for disappointment?

I'm not sure if you're on to something, but I'll never be one to deny a faction a shot at another DLC. May your wretched knife eared goddess be with you.

Its pretty funny how bretonnia get the short end of the stick even in this game where all the most meaningless craps from the lore seem to have a right to be add to the mix.

Giving straight, I would be cautiously optimistic, leaning more to the caution.

I actually had the privilege to talk to someone from GW yesterday afternoon for about an hour and a half. It was a really great conversation. Apparently the offices in Nottingham are functioning completely differently now (things like certain employees not having dedicated spaces, and I'm not talking accountants), and the changes made due to COVID are likely going to be permanent.

Reason I bring it up? As you are a devoted fan of Bretonnia, I am a devoted fan of Chaos Dwarfs. I asked him to, if he was able, give a timeframe on old world. I was under the impression that would be our best chance of seeing magnificent big hats again. His answer? Don't hold my breath. I pushed, and he told me to measure in years rather than months.

As for us Dawi Zharr enthusiasts, he kind of gave me a wink and a nudge that Chaos Dwarfs will be coming before the release of Old World. An AoS release is totally ideal, but having them back in plastic is a win no matter how one spins it.

So it really depends on the timeline for that DLC pack. It certainly is plausible.

    IN PLASTIC?
Heresy. Any chaos dwarf made of plastic is no better than a hobgoblin.

Personally I expect the Beastslayer be it FLC or DLC. They'll find a way to put a character somewhere.
So...the Light's vaunted justice has finally arrived. Shall I lay down Frostmourne and throw myself at your mercy, Fordring?

Honestly there are possibilites for Bretonnia, atleast in its current form, to come into WH3 even without including the homeland. There are records of Bretonnians visiting the Mountains of Mourn in quest-like expeditions. One being the obscure Sir Baldrin of Brionne, who got himself killed by monsters. The other is the famous Calard of Garamont, who has won duels of honour against Ogre Tyrants and has been hunted by Gorgers around the caves in the Mourns.

So a Bretonnian expedition in the Mourns, either headed by Bohemond or Calard, is the best bet (that Im aware of) lorewise for Bretonnia in WH3. Not a bad position either I'd say.

As for not including the homeland, it simply might have been a decision of resources and focus elsewhere. Including the Empire makes sense because of Kislev being a core and then the fact that Boris Todbringer has been promised. Thus including most of the Empire is a necessity, especially if they plan on bringing Boris in on WH3's map and not just on Big ME.

They made the race an FLC and they've been sticking by it. I doubt a Bretonnian lord will become DLC.

CA devs stated as recently as last year that they consider the race done in terms or army composition, that was way after Old World was announced as well as the fact that Bretonia will be a major part of it. Stuff might have changed since then, but I doubt very much even GW would bring drastic changes to Bretonnian lineup in terms of new units, except for slightly updated minies of the already existing ones. After all, the ability to blow the dust off of the old minies was the major part of the Old World promotion.

As for CA - Bohemond was namedropped last year, as well as Red Duke and "dark Bretonnia" the year before.

As to why they don't appear in WH3 - the map's south-western edges are extremely warped and given the relative space the only province that can somewhat fit would be Courone. I guess having the whole race represented by just one province didn't make sense or something.

i am really hoping for DLC ideally right around dark lands and near mountains of mourn to wage a great errantry war towards chaos wastes.

there will obviously going to be massive changes when GW touches them , it will please one or displease others as with any massive change.

any ways yes i think your 100% correct though i doubt we see bretonnia in the first year( wanna be wrong so badly) , stay strong for the Lady one day we shall ride once more !!!

A Bretonnia FLC is basically guaranteed so I wouldn’t worry about it.

    @Cosmic_Lich

Since they are returning to Mini Campaigns don't doubt that they will add whoever wherever they want, if they don't fit they'll just put them in a Mini Campaign and on Mortal Empires.

Don't be shocked if they update the Season of Revelations map just to sell some more DLC.

If they do more mini campaigns then they could also do the Year of Woe. We have Kairos. We have Bretonnia. (:

I think they excluded a number of races because they didn't have the resource to rework their settlement maps just yet. So Tomb Kings, HE/DE were chopped because it was possible to reasonably exclude them from the map.

I am still holding out for Bohemond but not sure it will ever happen.

    Bohemond for game 3 please!

Oh I hope something fresh and good will be done with Bretonnia in the old world and in TWW3. The faction needs it.
