I dont understand the point of Nurgles cloud of flies?

Based on My understanding of it and its text its a flat +9 melee only when the unit is in melee. So its functionally on whenever it will have any sort of effect, therefor why not just give them a flat MD buff? Am I missing someything?

if it really is a "cloud of flys" then it should really have a short five meter effect range. so it would buff a unit the unit with the trait was fighing inside of.

Picture trying to fight big green monsters while thick swarms of flys try to get in you mouth and eyes obscuring your vision and distracting you.
I like all the races. Equally. Wood elves are just the first among equals.

that is the description for cloud of flies, gettinginto mouths and what not, i figurethey made it into an ability in kerps with tt rule and also make it stand out more. making it a trait and incorporate the ability as a flat MD increase would not tell the player how many points of melee defense is a bonus

Funny, because there is another passive in the game called 'swarm of flies' which lowers the MA of enemy units within a 35m radius. It's on zombie dragon mounts.

It's pure flavor because CA couldn't figure out what to give Nurgle

Personally I think Swarm of Flies should just be an activated ability that functions like Starcraft 1's Dark Swarm

You're missing the 15 sec cooldown. So after 15 sec of melee combat, the unit will get the 9 MD until the next time it leaves melee combat. Then, it will have to fight for 15 sec before it gets it back.

It could've been implemented better (I think SFO changes it to regen + missile resistance only out of combat), but it is slightly more involved than being on all the time.

One of the major benefits of it being a passive i've been told, is that it isn't effected by vigor loss penalties.

It doesn't work for the first 15 seconds. It's to show Nurgle gets stronger in prolonged melee.

It doesn't work for the first 15 seconds. It's to show Nurgle gets stronger in prolonged melee.

I'm willing to be wrong, but I think this is the answer to why it's not a flat MD buff from the very beginning.

When fighting Nurgle, this passive encourages you to kill Nurgle units quickly, or cycle charge, even in melee. If you kill them fast with a glass cannon, or spread out your engagements rather than a long continuous fight, you might not have ot deal with the passive triggering at all. Meanwhile, if you attempt to stay stuck in and 'slug it out' (*Beast of Nurgle pun tehe :D *) with Nurgle, then you get punished by this passive triggering. So there are at least some unique gameplay considerations to make in response to this passive.

I understand that it's not the most colorful passive. And I haven't done enough full testing myself to see exactly how it works. But just reading the text description, it seems like 'Cloud of Flies' is on some sort of short timed activation delay, so it wouldn't have quite the same effect if it was swapped into a flat MD buff from the very beginning.

Well, technically it's not quite the same as a flat increase to melee defense. It's delayed by a 15s initial cooldown, or the duration of the charge bonus of the first unit to attack it.
