The idea that generates most consensus that I have seen floating around is the RoC as a kind of bonus dungeon you enter optionally to complete challenges and get rewards, that way people isn't forced to interact with them if they don't want to but there are still incentives and rewards for those than want to, at the same time taking into consideration the special nature of the Realms.

I like the idea but I would have a few other conditions/rules:
- No survival battles, those are trash and break the pace of the game - No settling. These provinces should be owned by Gods factions (we already have them with the rebellions spawning directly an army of "Khorne" for instance) and the settlements should respawn after a few turns. E.g Skarbrand shouldn't be able to settle in Tzeentch Realm (and even less Katarin). - Impossible to attack your own realm as a Chaos faction. - The number of settlements still standing in a Chaos Realm should impact the "Great Game" mechanic. If 3 out of 4 settlements are still ok in Slaanesh's Realm then the effect of the chance for it dominating the Great Game should be multiplied by 0.75 (25% reduction). - Random rift spawning chance based on high corruption levels (e.g. corruption at 100 for Nurgle means 5% chance per turn to get a rift to its realm - these rift would last 1 to 3 turns and may spawn an army - neutral if you are playing a Nurgle faction, ennemies otherwise). - Dungeon-like gameplay: You come, you fight/raze, you get rewards, you get out. With the twist that it would be much harder for non-Chaos factions (25% attrition per turn, corruption traits for Lords - LLs excepted -, limited access to rifts).
IMO with such rules it would be ok, in a sand-box where Karl Franz can conquer everything from Naggaroth to Cathay while also being able to recruit a Bloodthirster if he succeeds to ally with Khorne, i'd say a hit & run in the Chaos Realm isn't the worst offender.
No settling : you mean in a realm which is not yours? Imagine there are 3 settlements in each realm Tzeentch attack Khorne and take a settlement --> must sack or raze, can't occupy. But if raze, then Khorne should be able to resettle.
All these suggestions still requite a complete rework of how the realms work just for the sake of some pretty maps? Seems like a waste of resources and quite frankly there doesn't even seem to be a consensus on how they should really work. Meaning whatever happens won't even get full approval from the ones supporting it nevermind the people who don't want it at all.

So this would mean factions other than nurgle won't spawn these rifts. But how are you supposed to get in there to kill Kurgath then?
Like this would force someone to keep a minor or major nurgle faction around for potential dozens of turns in hole of reaching the portal before it disappears again. It sounds extremely tedious to do.

Less a waste of resources that throwing away everything already done for the RoC anyway. They have the assets, the maps, etc. Even the mechanism. They just need to adapt it to IE tio make it actually fun

I don't see a way to make it function.
Because an area where most factions take an insane amount of attrition (which would be needed) just leads to moving in encamp stance. Which makes the attrition then pointless and prolongs the time without adding anything to the experience in my opinion.
Having random rifts open on the map anywhere except in North and south Pole goes against the lore and honestly also doesn't sound like much fun. People also ready hate the AI attacking from random directions so letting them do that even more sounds like a recipe for complaints.
Survival battles are just awful and should go (That seems the only thing everyone agrees).
Then you run into problems with each realm.
Like slaneesh realm is just walking through a portal each turn to get to the center. No idea why people think that's the pinnacle of map design. Sure it looks pretty, but it was even boring in RoC.
Tzeentch was just about the most infuriating guessing game ever. Admittedly, if the AI no longer gets to cheat there its less annoying.
Nurgles whole thing was the huge corruption you suffered. So in the reworked version there would then be nothing special anymore. Sure you can throw in some random plague, but that's not that special.
Khorne was probably the most fun, but would probably need to rewoked heavily. No idea if acces to a settlement can be gated behind the fight meter. Still that's probably the least problematic and the most fun.
Just use the cool battle maps for special regions in the chaos wastes or high corruption areas. The realms itself would be perfect for a mini campaign with only the Monogod factions and could probably work there with much less change (Monogod DLC?).

I'd like this idea if CA made the Realms considerably harder. They were never that hard even at launch before the nerfs honestly. Realms of Chaos should be super hard for anyone, this isn't a place for mortals.
