Ships can't upgrade Armor?

So I have finished Iron plating research in Fall of the Samurai, and one thing I noticed is that my ships remains in wooden plating, I tried placing them at upgraded port(Dry dock) but there is no retrain button. How does the ship armor works? And how to upgrade it?
