Using ranged units causes PC to freeze.

Strange I know,
When a ranged unit is selected, and I hover my mouse over an enemy unit, the game stutters for a second then freezes with the sound looping. The only way to resolve is to press the power button.
I can play the campaign as long as I like, and performance is otherwise fantastic.
Battles too are fine, unless as stated I try to use a range unit.
I have tried with and without mods and the issue persists,
a fresh install and different drive location did not help either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I can't have my game borked so close to Chaos dwarfs!
