Abysmal FPS on campaign map

NichtswisserNichtswisser MemberPosts: 84Registered Users
My PC is a good deal above the system requirements, yet the FPS on the campaign map are beyond terrible. The campaign map runs in my case @ around 15FPS, and that is a far cry from what is required to offer the eye the illusion of fluid movement.

I'm not sure what poor performance has to do with freezes and crashes. As I see it, those are totally different issues. Without the freezes and crashes I would still only get around 15 FPS on the campaign map. And it's not like I run the game on a freaking C64. Most of the time I have stable 60FPS in battles with vsinc enabled and everything maxed out, it's just the campaign map which runs extremely poorly for some reason.

Just for narrowing down the problem, did you try a new campaign to see whether it's related to a specific campaign ?

You could also try to find out whether it's CPU- or GPU related. For that, just look at the taskmanager for CPU utilization (only 1st core is relevant) and some GPU tool like Afterburner for GPU utilization. One is probably close to 100%. That would be the part to look for the problem.

Look at the screenshot, there is the afterburner overlay in the left upper corner. The GPU usage was around 26%... Strange, I just loaded the game again and now I have +45 FPS on the campaign map and the GPU usage is around 95%.

It can't be the AMD power safe feature at fault here since than the first screenshot would show reduced clock speeds. Something isn't right here and that might be related to why the game freezes all the time. Guess I have to wail till creative fixes what they broke with the last patch.

I am experiencing the same problem as you, and only since the FOTS patch.

9/10 load ups the campaign map will run at 10-15 fps. Battles run around 40fps with very little slow down.

On a rare occasion, I will load up the game and the Campaign map will be running at 40fps - but when I try to exit to windows I get a complete system lock up and have to hard reset.

People report this is caused by the AMD 7xxx series of GPU's, but I am running a Nvidia. So whatever the issue I don't think its driver related as it would be strange for this to be happening on two totally different GPU chips, with different drivers.

My sound, graphics and BIOS are completely up to date... and nobody seems to be able to fix this.

All drivers and BIOS up to date.

Just updated my BIOS as there was a new release a few days ago, my first run of shogun 2 was really smooth.. campaign map was at a solid 40fps.

Played one naval battle, it was also great performance. went to play a land battle - SYSTEM CRASH.

Rebooted pc, fired up shogun... sloppy performance again.

I am clean out of idea's about what is causing this. Perhaps I am taking the easy option by passing blame on CA, but is there no way this could be a problem with the game itself and not peoples hardware?

Hardware wise, my specs are completely different from Nichtswisser - My CPU is an AMD FX, and my graphics are Nvidia... Yet we have the same problem. The only common denominator in this equation is Shogun 2.

Scope - do you have any mods installed?

As of this moment I do not.

I remove pack files when they are not applicable to what I am doing - i.e I remove unit mods for the ROTS campaign if I am playing FOTS or vanilla.

I have a clean profile folder too, no custom scripts or anything.

I just played for a good 45 minutes, where the campaign ran smoothly to start with and slowly degraded over time becoming slower and slower.

It smells of a memory leak to me :(

Ok, my drivers are all up to date, the graphics card runs battles smoothly... I don't get it.. I have the hardware to run this - if it wasn't up to scratch then it wouldn't work fine sometimes, and other times sloppily.

Yeah I have used madboris' method - it didn't seem to help :/

I have applied hotfixes for the FX line of CPU's - fully up to date on windows updates too.. so I am at a complete loss :(

unless I change /set increaseuserva to 3000... or would this cause more instability??

I think some people have done it successfully, but it leaves next to nothing for the kernel and is not recommended.

    What date is your BIOS?

    What date is your BIOS?

    Release Date - 23/03/2012

Description - Update AMD AGESA code.
    - Improved memory compatibility.

    Version - 17.9 (H9) Type AMI BIOS

Its the latest BIOS available. You may recall helping me out in this thread billy: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/36582-Shogun-2-Crash-after-battle-Solution-Cleared-Roaming-folders-%28mod-leftovers/page2?

I was having a large number of crashes - that problem is fixed and they only happen maybe once to twice a day.

I remember now. As I said then, I'm not a real techie - I just try to help with the basic stuff when it gets busy. Not an overheating issue, is it - that card must have been around for a while?

Yeah it has seen some use, I am looking to upgrade that next but it won't be for a while.

It isn't getting overly hot - this is the only game on my system which I have these issues with - and it never used to happen. and I don't get any artifacts associated with graphics card stress though.

About 2 months ago I had the heatsink off, cleaned it up and put some arctic silver thermal compound on the ram and GPU chips - it might just need some routine maintenance.

Thanks for the help anyway billy, I will get onto it tomorrow :)

Are you getting this FPS issue for all clans, or just for Aizu? (Your picture shows Fukushima, the starting province for the Aizu clan.) There is an issue where clicking on the recruitment tab for Fukushima causes FPS issues, which we have reproduced internally.

I played only with 2 clans so far and in both cases I had the same issue. The other clan I played with was the Saga clan. At first I thought you guys went cheap with the animations on the campaign map (when a ninja kills someone for example) because they all appeared to be extremely clunky and non-fluid. It was only later when I checked FPS that it became clear why.

Thanks for the info Nicklaus, and thanks for the Dx's guys, I know you have posted them multiple times, but it really saves time being able to see them here.

Well, that's a 79xx, and an 8800 so let me see if I can reproduce it on the Saga -I just retired our 8800 112+ last year, and I don't have a 7xxx, but I do have a number of other Green cards including a 260 maxcore, 285 OC, 570, 580 and have just received a 680. I have a 6950 modded to a 6970 I can look at on Evotuc's machine so that'll have to do for Red. Give me a day or two, I have to set up the Saga code and I have a project to do with the link library I promised to finish by ... last night (doh).

While I suspect that 8800 is going to simply struggle because of age, and it is further hampered by a 32 bit OS, the 79xx should not suffer for either of those reasons.

We know lock ups may take place with this new card, but that should not lead to the FPS issue equivalent to the 8800 unless there IS something at issue in the coding per Nick's statement. This is of course even more curious since settings and resources are so significanly different yet the result is the same. If it is also the same for Saga on the more powerful card, there may be a more general case for the issue. I will try trials with these 6 cards I listed, and it would perhaps be helpful if Scope could make a stab at the Saga... I don't have any outstanding issues to date with these cards insofar as there is no crashing or other errors, so it should be intersting to see if I can go out and find one. :)

I personally have been playing the Tsu clan and the FPS lag happened from turn 1 when I only had about 3 provinces uncovered. Saga is a special edition clan right? I would try them out but I bought my copy over steam.

Curiously - This FPS lag doesn't happen all of the time. If I reboot the game several times, The FPS lag on the campaign map randomly cures itself and is a smooth 30-40fps - but the thing I have noticed is that every time this lag dissapears my game will crash randomly at some point during the session - usually when starting a battle.
