Try going to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2 and delete the following folders:

    army_setups
    battle_preferences
    fx_cache
    ui_cache
    Scripts

If that does not work, exit Steam, then try going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam and deleting the following:
    AppUpdateStats.blob
    ClientRegistry.blob

Then restart Steam (it will update) and try to validate Shogun 2. See if that helps.

Hi Goose, do you only have FotS, or did you have Shogun 2 previously?

Welll... that explains some of the files not being about. On the other hand that is a very interesting exception code you have there. I've never seen that one here before... Really. As far as I know, thats a .Net library error or a C++ error... Meaning you either don't have what was asked for or you don't have an updated vERSION of what was asked for.

Hang on a second while I think about it, but initially I would say you ether don't have all your Windows updates, have a corrupted windows file or two, or for whatever reason you or your security program wiped these .Net library or C++ files out, or quarantined them, or your harddrive forgot where it put these files, or -whatever.

Your system can't find 'em, so you'd be out of luck with FotS since it uses these to make the game engine do its stuff. This would require a re download of the .net files/C++ files and updates. I think we have a jumplink on that, so I'll cast about for that, and think if there is anything else that comes to mind...

    EDIT:
Here's a shortcut to update your Msvcr80.dll file:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_7206477_update-msvcr80_dll.html

And here is a link to our jumplink on the C++ files issue (number 12 in the list):
    http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/35425-PLEASE-READ-Common-issues-for-FotS-and-how-to-solve-them-(Updated-30-03-2012)?p=318188&viewfull=1#post318188

I may add another link here in a few, but do these and then verify cache of the game for starters.

And finally, here is the Microsoft link for the .Net issues that can occur. You can read the info at the top if that is of interest, but scroll down to the "More Information section" for a link on how to fix the.net library if we haven't solved the equation already with the first link or two above.

Mmmmm.... If its a legit copy of Windows, could be you got the Windows .Net update bug. Obviously if its NOT legit, there's nothing that can be done, and this conversation is over.

(For both posters, it is imperative you have a fully updated Windows operating system, and this includes some optional updates that are sometimes referred to as compatability or stability improvements as these can contain important items related to the libraries we are talking about.)

Basically in the case of the .Net update bug case, the .net files for some installations of windows fail to patch properly and then an interaction with certain applications causes the library not only to fail to function properly but it then BREAKS the Library for that useage. (Yeah, great!).

...So the Windoze geniuses put out a hotfix that solves this problem if you HAVEN'T already had a problem... - but of course it doesn't WORK if you already HAVE had the problem... And so, DUH-Microsoft, most people don't realize theres a problem with stuff not working until it BREAKS.

Anyway, those nimble noobs have put out an article on how to fix these libraries and then apply the hotfix, if you haven't already gotten the hotfix...(as linked in my post above). What we may want to try though is being a little more efficient and wipe all of the libraries that surround errors related to visual studio 2005 (where a lot of these splashscreen crashes can arise from)

Let me post an instruction here (will come back to that in an edit) and in the meantime, Gigi, can you post a dxdiag in this thread, or do you have one elsewhere?

Windows 7 is legit and fully up to date including bios, GPU, sound, ......

    Original thread with dxdiag
    http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/36265-FOTS-freeze-at-the-legal-splash-screen

Already started and later updated all the MS redistribute package

I will try and download the older packages and try to get the msvcr80.dll working. But so far the best result was version incompatibility due to being a x86 version.

OK update. So i found when installing vcredist_x86_90.exe, located in the redist folder, it would install it on another one of my drives, Drive F and when i looked into clean_vcredist.bat i found that it was pointed to the C drive. so i changed the to point to my F drive and was able to get passed the Splash screen. So i can start a new game but on loading it it would crash with the following error.

thats a runtime error for Microsoft C Runtime Library,

I would probably try re-installing Microsoft Visual C++ Run time if this doesn't work uninstall the file and re-download it and re-install it from the microsoft website itself.

hope this gets you up and running

    @ Gooseberry,
Welp... My last three suggestions may or may not help, but they are the things I have found most likley to solve 'imponderables'... and I offer them because I was passing by and didn't want to forget to mention them. Some other brightboy may have a better idea than me...so I really wouldn't do any of these (except the Chrome/security issue, perhaps) unless you have tried everythig else. I give no guarantees any of these would ultimately be successful.

I'm an old hand at systems building, not software, so what I do is based on AVOIDANCE of having to learn most of what makes software work, therfor a lot of software I HAVE to load I do under the following conditions:

    1)
I turn Security systems off and get rid of Chrome...

Chrome is hegemonic trowards a number of files that may or may not share some of the files you need to play the game, and can be a babbaca about letting them be updated. It may work for some people without issue, but your case is indeterminate. Get rid of it until we know. :)

If you have an AV/AM I am assuming it is fully updated. If not, this is likely a self inflicted wound and you can try updating it and then doing everything all over again, but if it IS fully updated (or it can't be updated), disable it and then make sure it is disabled ALSO for restarting on bootup. Now reboot and try running the game. No luck? Now try what the CA guys suggested with re-activating the .exe's in the redist folders... AND also the erasure of the client and update blob files. Now reboot again and see if the game will run (some files will have to rebuild in Steam first).

    2 and possibly 3)
I usually put basic systems together without RAIDs, since most people wanting this will do it themselves. As a result I typically use a large-ish single orthodox HDD with all system and loaded software on one partition. I am HARDLY saying this is neccessary, I am _only_ saying it is simple.

If I have a machine I find I need RAID redundancy on, I typically _DON'T_ want that as a gaming machine for many many reasons, and make my own gaming systems equally seperate and simple builds. I find I avoid a number of problems by maintaining complicated applications (of any kind, but certainly S2 is pretty 'up there' on the list) on the same drive as both the OS and the swap file, and that this is best named the C: drive.

    Not neccessarily in order:
(2)This may or may not entail reloading the game from scratch. Ultimately, I would do this with Security STILL disabled (and depending on which security program I would urge you to find it and its makers and beat both into many pieces with a ballpeen hammer).

(3)This may or may not entail reloading Windows from scratch. Obviously this would be best with a reformat and clean install as dirty installs can be problematic for various reasons.

Both of these activities may remove certain reigstry errors that might otherwise never be found, and certainly the latter one may solve all sorts of other adware, malware or issues with 'mods' of any kind that may have caused registry scrambles, and various library 'bugs' that may or may not have been properly expelled otherwise. If you DO undertake such a thing, I would probbaly suggest downloading and installing both Steam and S2 before ever installing your security again, and see also if it works - then try reinstalling security and see what happens... Hopefully you don't have F-Secure... [eyeroll]

I am not saying this is the best thing to do, or the only thing to do. I am not saying this is a satisfactory solution either, I am only suggesting what I do as an oldtime evader, and that I have the very same hardware as yours operating in systems I have built in recent times and there is NO hardware reason whatsoever for your system not to be working.

    Post edit:
The other poster evidently solved his by a Windows reinstall. I would hope this would not be your problem, but it could be.
