A combination of beta drivers, downloading DX11 from the game folder and editing the preferences file worked for me. Game is now playable with graphics on the highest I can get them, although still not looking as good as Shogun 2 in my opinion. Anybody know why I can't select 'ultra' on some of the options? Some are blacked out and don't select!
I can confirm the AMD beta drivers gave me a noticeable boost on the CAMPAIGN MAP. I am using an older card, an ATI 5770, on mostly medium settings with the unlimited box checked. With the beta drivers, the campaign map is much much smoother and my fps nearly doubled. That said, the game only uses approx 30% of my GPU on the campaign map according to Afterburner. Still, it is much better than yesterday.

mate, that can be an issue if you use Shader Model lesser than 5, if you use 3,4,4.1 it locks some of the options , hope it helped !
I've never had to wait upon a graphics card company to provide drivers tailor made for a game so it can be played without issues, this sounds like the blame game.
So what version drivers were they using with all these demos being played all over the world pre-release?
Darius rage quit at the battle of Gaugamela because Alexanders Phalanx were OP.
And to others, i am trying multiple settings so far, the problem are the drivers and the optimalization (we all know that) but for now i have played the game on this rig with 3 different settings applied:
Rig : MSI GE 60 ONC
Intel i5 Ivy Bridge - 32xxm
Nvidia Geforce GT650m 2 gb DDR5
8 GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 8 Pro (dont *****, this puppy gives me +5 to +10 frames in every game rather windows 7)
Nevertheless most impact on Frame Rate has Shadows game option, the least Texture filtering, which got me 39 FPS average on 2x , 16x, and OFF, as for grass and terrain, i jumped form Low to Very High settings with only loosing 5 Fps when both up
Welp, to sum up, the benchmark is pretty much useless even though its in forest and what not ... because when you actually go to Campaign Map, i notice stuttering, terrain loading O.o, Unit Selection Lags, and so on as for the Real Time battle lags ...
In a close swordsman combat when there is nothing but plain behind them its good, when you move back to see whole frontline its like watching a slide show, same when you look at a city, at whole sea ... etc
the major help for me so far was going from 1920 x 1080 to ... lol ... wait for it ... 1280x1024 .. .yeah that ...
So to sum it up, this Notebook isnt latest and greatest but it gets the job done on Ultra in Shogun, Crysis 2, F1 2012
P.S: GeForce Experience is utter ****, the ****ed thing keeps saying that my rig is not in minimum requirements, cheers from Slovakia !
Edit 1: I was using the WHQL driver, not the latest one, i did a format on my Notebook, and currently installed the latest beta driver. the .80 i think, will post results with same 5 settings (i did write them down xoxo)
Edit 2: ok so as far as now, i strongly recommend to atleast trying the latest BETA driver, i have gained +5 fps on allmost all 5 of my setups !
Thanks Welo! But unfortunately, I'm not able to select a Shader Model other than whatever the lowest one is. Any ideas?
then you must have a lower end graphics card, that doesnt support better shader model, i.e. Shader Model 5 is only supported in DirectX 11 graphics cards
Wow... I know I don't have the Ultimate gaming PC, but I´m able to run my games whit the highest settings... I already tried the recommendations, all settings are at their lowest and still cant play a decent battle. I have to say that this disappointing me a bit, my 3.6Ghz overclocked CPU, my GTX560T1, 6GB DD3 RAM aint enough... Sucks.
hmm, so if you have Shader 5 selected, and applied it in game i dont know where the problem could be, do you have the latest 3xx.80 beta drivers installed ? try that see if it works
Vegetation Alpha is a killer, Unit Details are very hard-CPU and there is a big gap beetwen High and Very High (use the Task Manager trick to improve the FPS a little, Priority: High), Shadows as always are the commodin to gain some extra, the rest of things doesn't change the performance for me except maybe a few FPS in some situations. Also, strangely I don't find SSAO affecting performance which is WEIRD.
BTW, I see a lot of people using lower Anisotropic filters, but that thing doesn't affect performance in any meaningful way since 5-6 years ago.
doing a very interesting campaing with carthage using a 260gtx. aprox 5 hours of play and 2 gamr freezes so far. other than that besides EXTREMELY c*appy textures in battles the game runs smoothy at medium.
But these are only temporary, and work for some, and don't work for other's, hopefully CA can make these workaround's unnecessary

Between the new Drivers coming out from Nvidia and AMD likely 70% of the issues should go away that are directly related to performance, the rest like turn times, ect. Is down to solving the dual turn issue. Which If I recall is supposed to be in the first patch on...Friday? I think it was.
CA is working incredibly hard to fix their side of the issues. Lets hope Nvidia and AMD do as well.

If I can make a suggestion for you to pass back into the CA team, but if they are working incredibly hard (and I'm sure they are) then perhaps their PR team should be more active in actually engaging, communicating, updating and educating their legion of fans on these forums about that.
Revolutionary I know and in no way discounting the genuinely fantastic service that you and others are providing by assisting people by running threads like this, but I cannot help but feel that many people would feel better if they heard more often from CA directly. A little acknowledgement of the issue if you will.
Crisis management 101 is to get out in front, communicate well, communicate frequently and be realistic with what resolutions you promise. It honestly feels like CA are either too scared or too arrogant to engage with their fans/customers, neither of which is a great look.
game runs awesome, had some pretty aweful stuff going on with shadows and textures not loading on this machine. been just dealing with it and trying out things people recommended on forum.
Did step 4 in the first post and it like fixed my issues amazingly well. everything looks really good now. so thank you for the info.
So im running with a Intel i5 2500 sandy bridge processor @ 3.3 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 ti (factory OC) 1GB of RAM
4 GB of RAM
Windows 7 64 bit
Now my question is I am having trouble with running this game smoothly and the textures BLAH! the only way I can make them look decent is clicking the unlimited video memory option. but then my computer takes a performance hit, now with downing my options to very high/ultra and getting almost 30 FPS solid.
now do I need to think about upgrading my memory to 8 GB? is it my processor holding things back?
or should I be patient and let patches and drivers come out to make a more stable framerate at good graphics, I know my computer can do it! :P
Latest drivers installed last night, they were one of the things which sorted the bad FPS. I'm going to see if changing the preference file made a difference to the options I can select.

There are at least 10 CA Staff actively in these and other areas of support working on gathering information, and fixes. As well as making statements. I would look around some
If there are no 'official' drivers, how did QA manage to pass off the game ?
Quite a few games have had this problem, but not everyone is effected. Generally over 10 games 1 for each person may have some kind of problem. At least this is what I've experienced over 8 years of supporting TW games. Every time there is a release we get different people having issues that many others don't have.

Hardware master, good to hear they are working on it, all parties AMD / NVidia & CA that is music to my ears.
I posted earlier in this forum with my testing findings. Just want to add, I've tried the game and run the benchmark with the latest ATI drivers (this being 13.8 beta) & the most recent release (13.4 I think this is right im not sure).....
I have 2x 7970 crossfire, after extensive testing I have determined that the beta drivers are way better for single card support, but terrible for crossfire. I only completed my tests with DX10 forced via the script file, all tests were performed at 1920*1080 (this is because my rig requires crossfire for the 3 monitors to work), I have lower the shadow to Low & and have lowered grass & tree's to High from Extreme. Since AA doesn't seem to make any difference to look or performance the tree's & grass don't seem to be total relevant to me.
Also the turn time in campaign has not been to much of an issue for me, however I did set the game executable to run in high priority & turned of show cpu move. I do have i73960x @ 5ghz.
13.4 ATI drivers cross fire 5760*1080 with dx10 forced tree's & grass on high & shadow on low and full screen has made the game completely playable.....I am loving it, can't wait for the bugs to be ironed out so I can enjoy it more, thx CA.
Not really a solution, but I have something akin to a tip... If you have tried to get decent performance out with Shader 5, disabling tesselation through your driver control does wonders. At least it did for my 7970. Went from horrible 20 or lower FPS to manageable 30ish.

Great! thats extremely useful information that you very much! With proper drivers you should get proper Profiles, meaning that your SLI should work correctly.

When I installed directx from the Rome 2 folder and nvidias beta driver I gained around 10 fps in average fps. Still need patches and driver update because my fps is very unstable, varies from 5-45 fps.

Campagin lag: This happens when I select an army and press one city to the next. Otherwise it works fine.
Press stragetic view or diplomacy, there is a decent amount of lag.
Though it only lasts few three seconds.
