Before you start a new thread, please check to see if your question has already been answered. There is a search tool near the top right of the forum, and there is a jumplink list at the end of this posting that will be updated from time to time with links directly to solutions and workarounds. Note there is also an address to post crashdumps to CA in the post below this one, to help them debug.

We usually follow a one support request per topic policy to avoid mixing up to many different problems in one topic (even if the apparent error is the same the cause might be different).

If posting in other peoples topics please do not post your dxdiags without being asked for them, if you think you have the same problem rather create a new topic and post your dxdiag and all necessary infor in it and include a link to the topic you think it is related to.

Lastly if you have a question about whether YOUR computer/hardware can run a TW game or what parts you would need to upgrade. Please use the general hardware discussion section found here:

Very lastly - the official support is handled by SEGA: http://www.sega.com/support/

The Moderators are not in any way affiliated to or with SEGA / CA apart from having the allowance to moderator those boards. Please keep that in mind.
ANY official support or direct requests thus cannot be answered by the Moderator Team.

You may find within the title of someone else's thread that the issue has been solved in the past.

If you cannot find a thread with a similar problem, there are some basic checks and updates that you should perform first.

1. Is the inside of your computer free of dust?

2. Is windows and are ALL your drivers up to date? (Especially your sound drivers, yes your sound drivers)

3. Have you verified the integrity of the game cache?

4. Have you checked to make sure that your computer is not overheating?

If none of the above resolves the problem you are experiencing, or if you do not understand how to perform those actions, you should post a new thread in the support section.

There is a format which you could follow that would make the process much faster.

1. Within the title of your thread, please state the problem clearly.

2. Post your Direct X diagnostics information.

A. Click the start button or press the windows key on your keyboard.

B. Type dxdiag. dxdiag.exe will pop up. Click it.

StartDXdiag.png

C. Click Save All Information.

Save.png

D. A window pops up asking you where to save it, choose Desktop on the left. Click Save.

SaveDXdiag.png

E. A text file called DxDiag.txt is now on the desktop. Open it and copy all of the text.

F. At the top of your thread, type (CODE) (/CODE). But, instead of parentheses, ( ), use brackets, [ ].

G. Paste the text from the dxdiag between the codes. = (CODE) paste here (/CODE) Don't forget to use brackets instead of parentheses.

H. If you get an error because there is too much text to fit in the code: Split the dxdiag in half and make two code containers.

Example: (CODE)Paste first half(/CODE) (CODE)Paste second half(/CODE)

It should look like this:

Please omit everything after DirectShowFilters to save space, it's unnecessary in all but codec related issues.

3. Give as much evidence of your issue as possible.

A. To share files, such as saved games or replays, upload them to a free file hosting site such as mediafire.com and link to the file.

B. To display pictures within the thread, take the following steps.

Open Windows Paint.
Start the game.
Press CTRL + Print Screen when you are ready to take a snapshot.
Paste into Paint and save to your desktop.
Upload to your favorite picture hosting site, such as Photobucket.
Within your thread, click the Insert Image icon above the text entry and put the DIRECT LINK to the picture in, not the page URL where the picture is found.

C. To share a video, either use Fraps to record the issue or, use a camcorder. A camcorder is preferred because Fraps uses system resources and that could slow your system down.

Upload the video to a video hosting site, such as Youtube.com.
Within your thread, click the Insert Video icon above the text entry and put in the URL for the video.

4. Along with any of the above evidence that you provide, please give detailed, well thought explanations to accompany these items.

Please note that any abusive language toward The Creative Assembly, their staff, the moderators or any member of this community will not be tolerated and will result in a ban. The length of said ban will be dependent upon the severity of the offense and your past history. So, please be courteous as this will help get your issue resolved much faster.

    1) Save games, replays, preferences scripts and logs can be found here C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_NAME\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\save_gamesr (Type %appdata% into run) then select Creative Asembly, Shogun 2.
    2) Steam crash dumps can be found here C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2. They look like this shogun2_3241_crash_2011_3_22T15_47_10C0.mdmp
    3) In the subject box please put the title of the thread from which you originally posted on the forums
    4) Please Zip any files to save space.
    5) Add any additional details and a link to the original forum post. dxdiag, forum username and any pictures, videos and replays would also help.

    Link compendiums.

The link listings in this post are dated, and new FAQ/solutions are listed seperately below this over the next few pages, so you may wish to read through them. Originally these lists were used to link items back to the Tech Discussion area for simplicity and provide a common data-base for fixes but given the general change in behavior and issues both with systems and TW titles, this seems less useful at this point. Eventually most of these should be moved and or re-codified in the Wiki, and future updates made there only. ~Al Dec 9, 2012

    FAQ #11

Quick Fix for S2 not launching after patching
This is a post from Craig TW lifted directly from the Steam S2 forums, regarding
"Installation issues with new patch (suggestions)" I place it here so it can be referenced in the jumplink library for safekeeping.

    Hi guys,

If you're having problems starting Shogun 2 since the latest patch, here's what we recommend you try. We find this process resolves nearly all cases.

    1. Run the Visual C++ redist setup again. This can be found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2\redist\vcredist_x86.exe, or your equivalent directory (varies according to OS).

    2. Delete or rename your preferences script. This can be found by typing %appdata% in any navigation bar then hitting enter. Navigate to The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scripts\ and delete or rename the file preferences.script.txt

    3. Verify the integrity of your game cache. Right click on Shogun 2 and click Properties. Then navigate to the local files tab and click "Verify integrity of game cache...". This ensures your version of Shogun 2 is exactly the same working version that appears on the server.

    4. Delete your Steam ClientRegistry.blob file. This can be found in your Steam installation folder (for me it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam)

We also urge you to ensure you have the latest drivers installed, particularly for your graphics card and soundcard. Shogun 2 uses recent drivers, so you'll need to be up to date.

With any luck, one or more of those things will do the job and you'll be shooting arrows into faces before you know it.

    Hope it helps!

    FAQ #12

    CLEAN STW2 + STEAM installation:

Before proceeding please make sure to write down the username and password of your Steam account as you will need them to reinstall afterwards.

    1. Launch STEAM
    2. Select My Games
    3. Right Click on Total War: Shogun 2
    4. Select Delete Local Content
    5. Exit STEAM
    * Ensure STEAM is not shown near Notification Area (system clock)

If STEAM is shown in the Notification Area right click on the STEAM icon and select exit.
    6. Uninstall STEAM through the Control Panel:

    * Windows Vista > Programs and Features
    * Windows XP > Add and Remove Programs

    7. Once uninstalled go back to the Control Panel and enable Classic View.
    8. Select Folder Options
    9. Select View
    10. From Advanced Settings enable locate Hidden files and folders.
    11. Select ‘Show hidden files and folders’
    12. Click Ok
    13. Next remove the Creative Assembly folder from the Roaming folder as specified below:

    - Windows Vista:
username folder (above Documents) >AppData > Roaming > The Creative Assembly
(Save games are stored in the following folder ‘save_games’ with ‘The Creative Assembly’, store or backup elsewhere if you wish to keep these).

Right click on The Creative Assembly
    Select Delete

    - Windows XP:
My Computer > C: Local Disk >Documents and Settings > (username folder) > Application Data > The Creative Assembly

Save games are stored in the following folder ‘save_games’ with ‘The Creative Assembly’, store or backup elsewhere if you wish to keep these).

Right click on The Creative Assembly
    Select Delete

    14. Next, make sure the Total War: Shogun 2 registry entries have been removed. While doing the following, please be aware that the Windows registry is a very sensitive part of Windows. Mistakes can render your system unstable so be VERY careful when making any changes." - in my opinion, you should backup your registry first by selecting file/export from the node you're changing (or the top of the registry tree). This will produce a file which you can double click to restore the registry if things go wrong.

    - Click Start
    - Click Run (Windows XP) Click Start Search (Windows Vista)
    - At the prompt type: REGEDIT and press Enter. The registry editor will open.
    - Click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    - Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.

    - Right-Click the entry “Valve” and choose delete from the menu that appears
    - Choose Yes to confirm deletion

    - Click the "+" next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
    - Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.

    - Right-Click the entry “Valve” and choose delete from the menu that appears
    - Choose Yes to confirm deletion

    - Close the Registry Editor

    15. Once done, restart your computer to complete the removal of Total War: Shogun 2.

That last part is important. Also, if you have 64-bit Windows, the registry keys they mention are in a slightly different place.

    FAQ 20

Recently released FX Series CPUs by AMD may need a motherboard Bios update to run S2:

    http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/STEAMGamesonAMDFXplatforms.aspx

    IMPORTANT!

Simply having updated bios may not overcome some of the issues that current versions of Windows (usually Windows 7 for most users) may impose on the new FX processors.
This particularly relates to multi-threading and core-parking which can cause FX processors to grossly underperform in some cases.
It can also cause stopping at the loading screen as well as rebooting the system or Crashing issues.

You may elect to follow and perform BOTH or EITHER of these hotfixes if you have an FX processor AND Windows 7 and feel this may be a problem you are facing.

ANY ACTION YOU TAKE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. These links are provided as a convenience for your reference, and are not necessarily advised, nor are we necessarily recommending you update your BIOS as that is a step and risk that is also entirely up to the individual who is the only person capable of determining their need or ability to do so.

    1)Fix the multi threading
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2645594

    2)Fix the core parking
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646060

    3) Additionally to that an update to your BIOS with a version LATER then the FX-CPU release date (December 2011) may be required in order for the above patches to work.

Compendium of 'most likley suspects' fixes for post FotS patch (excluding 32 bit and other specific symproms): Savegame and Splash Screen - non 32 bit system.

Most of the following contain a number of fixes for splash screen freezing and the like if you have a non 32 bit system. 32 bit systems are likley needing the 32 bit workaround posted as a sticky in the general Support forum for Shogun 2.

(also see the awesomium issues) here:http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/34876-Shogun-2-crash-during-legal-splash-screen-information, and dealing with Steam issues like this:http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/35653-Crash-to-Desktop-splash-screen?p=321195&viewfull=1#post321195.

Particularly prevalent is not having mods entirely removed. Perfectly valid mods can often place items in the Username/Appdata/Roaming/Crative Assembly/S2 folder and you have to go take them out manually sometimes or the game won't work. Usually you can target specific files, although you can wack the entier S2 folder in there and let the Game/Steam rebuild it form scratch.

Illegal modifications can cause a registry scramble in windows which will not be solved by an uninstall.

    Savegame issues
If you are having trouble with savegames that are from prior to patching or adding FotS, my experience with savegames that were from the original S2 is mixed. IN general I would not suggest using them. Saves I have started post FotS have all worked flawlessly (even if my play has not!).

If your savegames that are a trial and _are_ from SINCE the update, I suspect either the memory issue to do with 32 bit systems (see sticky in general support forum for S2) or similar resource shortage in 64 bit systems that may include vram or system ram if you don't have enough. There CAN be other items on the above links that could be contributory -some of which you may have looked at, or may have thought irrelevant.

At the time of this post there ARE problems with the release vis a vis AMD 7xxx series cards and the latest AMD drivers, but there are no other known hardware conflicts that should be common.

Dark's 'Not loading from DVD possible solutions' workaround (posted 3/14/2011)

    * Open Steam's game list
    * Right click on the game and click 'Delete local content'. The game will be moved to the not-installed list.
    * Insert Disk 1 into your DVD drive and close Steam (File, Exit).
    * From the Windows Desktop, click on the Start Button, (XP) click Run (Vista) type Run into the Start Search box and choose Run from the list.
    * In the Run box enter the following:

    c:\program files (x86)\steam\steam.exe -install E:

Replace E: with your appropriate DVD drive and Steam directory if they differ.

Press OK, Steam should now start the installation from the Disk 1 and will ask for Disk 2 a bit later on.

At the end of the installation process, there may be an update varying around 500MB.

Some people have also reported changing their Steam download region may help with any 'Steam server is busy' issues that may also inhibit installs.
You can change this in Steam > Settings > Downloads + Cloud tab.

    FAQ 26 (Archival)

Workarounds for some AMD cards not being able to choose higher settings (posted 3/16/2011)

There appears to be a case where many upper tier AMD cards cannot choose upper levels of Graphical settings (High/Ultra), these options being greyed out.

There are two ways in which this may be overcome, where the first one appears to work for 4800 series cards, and the second one will work for later cards (which appear to be primarily 6xxx series).

Workaround#1) Appears PRIMARILY effective for 4800 series cards, but this has not been definitely determined to be liited only to them:

It has been reported that this may be a problem for certain system profiles with AMD cards using 11.xx series drivers, and a reversion to Driver 10.12 or earlier may fix this problem, allowing these profiles to choose High and Ultra settings once the rollback is complete.

Thanks to Iano, PieLord, and DeepJay for this workaround

Workaround #2)Appears PRIMARILY to be effective for later cards (such as 6xxx series):

Change the amount of ram reported in the preferences file command line for mem detection and use the preference file from the preference fix sticky for card group #2 (remember to change the memory quantity after you paste ;)). To see the exact number to use (its not simply 512), and see the discussion, see: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/9765-Cannot-choose-high-or-ultra-yet-could-in-the-demo?p=130079&viewfull=1#post130079

Note that workaround number 2 will only get you to high settings, and not ultra (at least so far) and that you may be able to move up your driver version if driver version did not restore high and ultra settings.

Thanks to Katsu, Elliptic and DeepJay and Iano for this workaround.

    Al

    FAQ 28 (FotS)(Archival)

Nicklaus' post on FotS/update Splashscreen crashes to do with Chrome/Incredibar and possibly other addon/malware/adware redirection sources.(posted 3/16/2012)

    Hello all,

Lately, people seem to be experiencing an issue where Shogun 2 is launched, reaches the splash/legal information screen, and then stops altogether, ending with a crash. (Please note that if you are starting Shogun 2 for the first time, that is an unrelated non-issue, as the game has to compile shaders, which can take a while, up to 10 minutes.)

To combat this issue, there is a two-step method to follow:

    1) First, check your web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome) for addons/plugins/extensions. Disable or uninstall these one by one and see if the issue is fixed. Especially take note of anything referring to Incredibar, a toolbar for Internet Explorer and Firefox which is actually malware. Check for any other forms of malware similar to that and remove as needed. Ensure that your anti-virus software is up to date.

To fully remove Incredibar, go to regedit using an Administrator account. Search for and delete every instance of Incredibar.

    2) If you are absolutely sure that you have no plugins/extensions/addons or malware attached to your web browsers that is causing the issue, then it is likely to be video/audio drivers that are outdated, BIOS issues, etc. For this, you can search the support forums for help as there are multiple threads and fixes for various issues, or start a new thread, making sure to follow the instructions here: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/9291-***Before-You-Post-in-the-Total-War-Shogun-2-Support-Forum-Please-Read-First!***

Additional Note - recent experience has shown that some add-ons, for example McAfee Web Advisor, must be uninstalled rather than just disabled.

    FAQ 29 (FotS) (Archival)

Nicks post on FotS not showing up in Steam after install (posted 3/22/12)

    Hi all,

There have been a few queries regarding Fall of the Samurai (FotS), specifically why it doesn't show up on Steam. Here are some key points:
    - FotS is a standalone DLC. That is, you can buy FotS and play it without owning Shogun 2.
    - FotS is also an expansion DLC. This means that if you own Shogun 2 and buy FotS, it gets integrated into Shogun 2.
    - Because of this, we treat both FotS and Shogun 2 as one title, which is Total War: Shogun 2. There is no Total War: Fall of the Samurai game entry for Steam, which is why FotS appears as part of the Shogun 2 DLC list. It’s a technical requirement rather than any comment on the nature of the expansion.

I hope this clarifies any confusion that might occur, and I hope you all enjoy FotS as much as we at The Creative Assembly do.

    Regards,
    Nick.

    FAQ 30 (FotS)(Archival)
The 'Mad Boris' or The 32-bit OS workaround originally illustrated by Mad Boris for ETW, solves crashing for 32 bit OS's limited by address space in the application:

It seems that 32-bit operating systems 'hit the wall' with FotS and the S2: FotS Update with extremely high frequency. So much so, that something like half the support threads I have looked at in recent days appear to be 32 bit user-memory issues.

The good news is you can do something about it.

Follow these instructions for the ETW workaround for 32 bit systems experiencing this user-memory limit. Its exactly the same for S2:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=238484

Note you only have to do the one alteration for the ini.boot file and you're done. All TW titles since ETW are already issued Large Address Aware (LAA). Again, this is for 32 bit windows users only: THIS WILL NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON 64-BIT USERS so if you have 64 bit Windows with issues, it is the result of something else. Post a Dxdiag and let us have a look!

If you would like more background information on the subject of memory and 32 bit applications (and memory in general) you can look in our Jumplink library:

    FAQ 32

Some Windows Vista and System 7 64 bit OS's may undercommit Pagefile and act like 32 bit Mad Boris situations. Some 32 bit systems may also have this condition in addition to needing the Mad Boris workaround:

Windows uses an aging calculation that may not make sense when determining minimum pagefile size for some modern computing situations.

    1)
If you have 4gigs or more of System Ram, try setting at least the minimum (I prefer to set the minimum and maximum pagefile to the same value, your mileage may vary) equal to the amount of physical ram you have. You may have to disable Windows' auto-manage function in the Pagefile/Virtual Memory control box to do so.
    2)
If this does not solve the problem, or makes it worse, you may want to defrag your harddrive containing your Windows installation and Pagefile/Swapfile (these will be on the same drive unless you moved them, in which case, what is important is where the pagefile or Swapfile is).
    3)
If you now have enough FREE and UNFRAGMENTED drive space (say at least more than 10% of drive size and more than twice your amount of ram in gigs), increase the minimum size to double the amount of physical ram you have, up to say, 10Gigs.
    4)
As always, you should also be disabling all unneccessary background programs and processes (which you can find in Taskmanager), or avail yourself of Gamebooster (free until June of 2012) to do it for you.

If this doesn't solve your problem, you can choose to leave it as is or revert to previous settings. This is a cheap, fast and relatively harmless experiment which also may be beneficial for other situations, and is easily rreversible, although DO note that while increases in size may not need a restart to take effect, decreases usually DO. I usually do a restart in either case to be certain my change has been made permanent.

A reasonable description of how to change Vista Pagefile size (with an amusing half dozen comments below the article)
Change or reset Vista Pagefile/Virtual Memory

A reasonable description of how to change W7 Pagefile size (not as amusing, but it _is_ 'official')
Change or reset W7 Pagefile/Virtual Memory

    FAQ 33

Nicks "limited lobotomy": Some behavior including both crashing and other types of graphical artifacting may be solved by elimintating some basic Shogun 2 Appdata files, and the Steam files that may be telling S2 that everything is hunkey-dorey when it isn't!

Try going to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2 and delete the following folders:

    army_setups
    battle_preferences
    fx_cache
    ui_cache
    Scripts

Exit Steam, then go to C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\STEAM and delete the following:
    APPUPDATESTATS.BLOB
    CLIENTREGISTRY.BLOB

Then restart Steam (it will update) and try to validate Shogun 2. See if that helps.

    FAQ 34

Orochi CEG Fix for FX CPUs without a Bios update to fix FX issues with Valve games: Some FX based systems are likely to BSOD or show other symptoms on startup including rebooting and or other behavior that prevents the user from accessing the game or accessing it reliably.

This fix is not official and cannot replace a permanent Bios update from your motherboards' maker, which in all cases you should insist upon and should eventually receive. This is only a temporary and generalized code, and while it has had generally good results, it may not work in all cases, nor are we in any way responsible for your use of it.

A temporary fix until you can get a bios update from your maker (if you can) is to use the Orochi CEG workaround. A poster on Xtremesystems wrote a fix that is the basis for most of the betas out there that fix the problem. It DOES have to be reloaded at every boot up, but if you read the whole thread, you will see some smartguys figured out a way to have it auto reload on startup every time.

Take a look at this site, read the ENTIRE first post and then decide whether you want to go through the rest of the thread (ignoring posters like Pad)
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?276698-A-fix-for-Valve-CEG-games-causing-BSOD-on-Bulldozer-issue

and then use this list of sites to get the program (the list is in post number 88).

    FAQ 35

    Billy's 'Maverick Mod fix'
Crashing and or other stability and/or artifacting issues occur when 'Modified' appears in game version
(Despite no mods or other file modifications ever having been done by user)

    Issue
Stability or artifacting issues occur when 'Modified' appears in the indication of the game version, even though nothing may have been done to the files by the user and no mod has ever been used. While not all indicated games (those with 'modified') will be unable to perform reliably, this may and can happen and act variously like a file issue or any of half a dozen other problems. This can also result in crashes, or failure to start, following an update.

    Solution
Note files listed in 'modified.txt' (found in your User/AppData/Roaming/Creative Assembly/S2/logs file - you may have to 'unhide' files to see in the AppData folder), go to steamapps/common/Shogun 2/data and move the listed file(s) out of the game folder(s) where it is (they are) (not deleting them until it is certain the game will function without them). Reverify cache. Restart the game.

If the game works reliably as a result the modified files can be removed. At least in one case, save games were lost, but the game was stable.

    Possible Explanation
This is still being researched although it is possible use of cloudsaves or coop saves could be a culprit.

Recent events seem to point to the possibility in a number of cases of needing a two-step dance with the modified pack files as demonstrated in the first 4 posts of this thread -note that 'modified' will _not_ appear in many cases...

    FAQ 36

    "The Secret Agent"

S2 uses a budget program that decides on a settings budget based heavily on the vram of the card that is detected. If it feels that the settings are beyond the 'budget' it will, without a by-your-leave, simply turn down whichever settings it feels it needs to and to the degree it feels it needs to, to keep inside the vram budget it feels appropriate.

It will not leave any obvious trace that it was operating, or change the settings that appear on the settings/options page to reflect what settings the game is ACTUALLY running on.

It will not ask you if you want it to turn anything down.
It will not tell you that it has.
It will leave your settings and options unchanged even though those may not actually be the settings the game is now running at.
The only place you can find evidence of its passing is in the gfx.txt logs.

You can find the things it turned down in the gfx.txt logs, which, in a default setting, is going to be around here: Username>AppData>Roaming>Creative Assenbly> Shogun2>logs.

Even here in the gfx log, this secret agent program is giving up only minimal information. It will only record the LAST time the game was started and the changes it made for that session. The next time it will rewrite over itself (and each successive time) as if swallowing the microfilm, which of course leaves no historical trail over time either. If the log is empty, nothing has been turned down for the last session. Unfortunately that is all you know.

Effectively this means you may not be running at Ultra, High or anything else. You may be running at some custom combination of settings and or far lower than you may have imagined. This can also explain some cases where one can turn up graphical settings but apparently not see any real frame rate change that might stem from graphic bottlnecking. This may be being prevented through artificial means and your settings being maintained at whatever the secret agent feels is fitting for the resources you have.
