They are the platform for the new Sandy Bridge CPUs.

They are the second generation of the i5/i7 family processors from Intel. They offer increased processing power at similar power consumption to the first generation, and they generally handle multimedia decoding much faster.

For TW players, what is the operating end of the equation is they are

    1)Quad core
    2)Fast but cool in operation
3)Support Hyperthreading for up to eight logical threads to be handled simultaneously
4)Intel, likley to take superior advantage of multi-core support written with Intel tools.
5)Support Turbo, increasing frequency when needed above stock, still allowing stock and low idle speeds for longevity , low heat, and low energy use
6)Low cost for very technichally capable new CPUs.

They are not neccessarily the superior of 900 series I7 platforms, at least in many ways. However, they do point the way to the future.

Question: How long before my i7-950 becomes obsolete? I just bought it before Sandy Bridge came out and I am scared that it would become average in a year and below average in two.

So far, the 950 has proved to be a beast even without OC'ing.

"X68's" are expected later this year or if delayed, early next, which will be the replacement for the x58s we're using now. Given what we've seen so far, these will likely be faster yet again than the 1155s with probable use of the more robust standard of triple channel and QPI, and at even more blinding speeds. Assuming that the temperature and volting issues are not hampered by the same limitations the Netburst architecture experienced at upper reaches, it isn't unreasonable to expect CPUs approaching or surpassing the 4.0ghz mark on stock, or at least turbo. That said, the initial indications given by the 1155 socket is that this is more of an improvement of existing architecture than a radically altered and new one altogether. I would imagine a 950 to still be relevant if no longer leading edge for a few years yet ;) I hope so, since I have a 920, and can't see replacing it for another year or two. ;) Doh!
