and shogun 1 and 2 etc i doubt they will ever remake a game more than once as at the point the sells will start taking a heavy hit with very little if anything new aside from improved graphics

It seems like the Total War [Person’s Name] thing was working out. Napoleon was kind of a remake of Empire that is nice in what it does but kind of moves in the wrong direction for me. I wanted the whole world and better stuff about colonialism instead of just focusing on the French in Europe … though this is what the game is best in modeling, and what makes the 18th and 19th century games better, because people really did fight like computers then. Atilla is also great because it gets that “Dark Ages” Europe is cooler and crazier than Rome when everything was under control (more or less). The three kingdoms thing seems like an update of medieval, which was needed, but on the same idea as Napoleon (smaller, more focused, more narrative less sand box).

Anyway, what I would love to see is a Total War Wallenstein (Total War Fortuna?) that basically picks up in say 1492 with the end of the Reconquista and Columbus’ voyage and then goes all the way through the Italian Wars, the Reformation, and then the Thirty Years War, the other “wars of religion” and things like the English Civil Cromwellian Conquest of Ireland (that could be an extra module maybe). It could have a whole scale of characters/factions you could play from being a Hapsburg Holy Roman Emperor, to being a mercenary commander with a free company roaming around looking for work and booty. Also there could be factions that work differently like Venice and the Hansiatic League, or even the Dutch rabbles who go from being piratical Sea Beggars to being a global empire and get to both fight in all the European stuff and have colonial adventures. The mercenary armies/freebooter fleets, and also maybe peasant uprisings could be the equivalent of the “horde” in Attilla and there would of course be ways to go from being a mercenary commander to having lands and a title … but you wouldn’t be able to just click a button and do it.

The units and tactics would have a great development arc with things like pike-and-shot formations developing and cavalry tactics evolving, and the Gustavus Adolphus-to-Oliver Cromwell “new model army” replacing the old, mediaeval forms … and of course some moments to think about fighting well trained and armed soldiers with mobs of peasants wielding farm implements (always a good time). So musketeers an harquebusers and the “Spanish Square.”

Anyway, it would kind of be like Attila all over again but with guns and navy stuff and some actually edgy politics. If Empire was about Clausiwitz (who’s term Total War is of course) this could be Machiavelli’s prequel.
