Crash to Desktop during game loading

rocksteady530rocksteady530 Junior MemberPosts: 6Registered Users
I've been playing a game for 96 turns. Yesterday it started crashing to the desktop when I tried to load that game. After some frustration I started a new game. 20 turns into that game it's now crashing during the next turn. My laptop is only a couple months old and has more than enough resources to run the game. Here's my diag stuff:

I am getting this same thing. I get an "unexpected error" when i try to load certain saved games or continue my campaign. It seems like it has to do with the turn that I'm on. I can go a load a save from a few turns ago and that will let me continue, but I wish I didn't have to do this. Anyone know what I can do?

I just installed Shogun Total war and was not having this problem before I did that; not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I am getting similar problem, and only has occurred during the last few days. Program was working fine last weekend, and now it will not load saved games that it did load perfectly last weekend.

Yesterday I connected my PC to the net to get windows updates etc (I don't have a permanent internet connection).
Is it possible that some automatic update function in Windows, or Java, or Steam, or some other program has just loaded some update that doesn't agree with Empire Total War??

If so, why haven't a lot more people reported problems?

BTW, I am running Windows XP SP3, with DirectX 9.0c.
And as stated I've been running this game for some months with no problem, then suddenly today I get a crash as soon as I try to load any old game!!
I have checked, and this occurs whether I am running while offline, or with steam connected to net.

Can you start a new campaign?

How many programs do you have running in the background?

Do you alt-tab out a lot?

    Corrupted saves are nothing new.

I am having this same problem.

So, let me get something straight.

    1) Lots of people have this problem
    2) The developers know about it
    3) The developers have done nothing about it
    4) There is currently nothing that can be done about this problem

I am having this same problem.

So, let me get something straight.

    1) Lots of people have this problem
    2) The developers know about it
    3) The developers have done nothing about it
    4) There is currently nothing that can be done about this problem

Instead of ranting, post your dxdiag.

Look in control panel => programs & functions for a toolbar named "incredibar".

Uninstall it in case you find this malware.

lol, why? I've looked through about 3 dozen threads on this topic, and not one person has fixed this issue, posting my DXDiag isn't going to suddenly hit someone with divine inspirations and they will know how to fix the problem. Most likely I will be told to update my drivers, which will change nothing.

The only hope, imo, is to try to fix the save files. People says its possible with ESF Editor but no one ever knows how.

Incredbar only conflicts with Awesomuim, the cutesy CA added to Shogun2 for its sandbox.

The only ways I have found to minimze corrupted saves are,
    1. a fast cpu, I have a Phenom II 940,
2, a good gpu, my 9800GT 512mb does good on medium settings,
    3. 64bit OS, Vista or Win 7, I have Win 7 Por 64bit,
    4. 4gb ram of which I do have,
    5. massive amounts of free harddisc space, mine is always 3oogb or better but 50gb should be enough, as a swapfile is running over 20gb,
    6. defragged of wich I do weekly,
    7. nothing running this game does not need, of which I have shut down in msconfig.

    Match it?

    7. nothing running this game does not need, of which I have shut down in msconfig.

    Match it?

Doesn't match system requirements on the box, but yes I meet all that, minus the not multi-tasking. The game, imo, is unplayable if I can't multitask.

You do realize the specs on the box went out the window when the third patch was released.

I have too many programs that dislike multitasking. I have also found Windows' memory manager lacking even in Win7. It's the reason I blame for some of my old corrupted saves going back to Medieval One and SimCity2.

Not really sure how a customer is supposed to know that the system specs changed from what is listed on the box. And once open, there isn't a chance of getting a refund.

Thanks for your time, but it is obvious to me how Creative Assembly does business and it is dishonest and shady. Although I was going to upgrade my PC to play Shogun 2 Total War, I will never buy anything from CA again, unless they personally credit me for a game I can not play.

Again, thank you for your time.

Also, I have never heard of another application that has save issues because of multi-tasking. Ever. I have worked in IT for 5 years, and have been a PC gamer for 20 years. Never ever have I heard of this problem.

Here is a list of some of the solutions that people have used to successfully correct crashes at the splash screen. As you will see there are ten of them, which tends to imply that there is more than one problem, otherwise the same solution would work for all. You will also note that all bar one are entirely user-end issues, and CA is working on the other one.

    Updating graphics and/or audio drivers.
    Updating BIOS for FX processors.
Removing Incredibar and any other malware.
    Disabling certain browser add-ons.
    Fully un-installing mods.
Increasing virtual address space (CA is looking into a way to get round the necessity).
Increasing space on the game drive.
    Verifying game cache.
Reverting back from Windows 8 (which is not a supported system).
Updating OS to latest service pack.

This is why we (the community members, like irishron), and CA, ask for Dxdiags. It give a clue as to which solution might be appropriate, and also helps identify whether there are other issues that cause the same symptoms.

If you say you expect to be asked to update drivers, that imples that you know your drivers are out of date, but have done nothing to help yourself. If you own a car, you may not expect to have to service it yourself, but you would expect to perform basic maintenance like checking tyre pressures, oil levels, and cleaning it. Why would the same basic maintenance not be necessary with a computer?

I have been building my own system since the old DOS 3 16bit days and doing my own software installs just as long when everything was handled through Bulletin Board Services if you could afford the long distance charges. 25 years?

Yes, I have had bad saves from multitasking. I have had bad saves from an autoupdater kick in as I was saving. SimCty3 for the way Maxis had the swapfile programmed, was notorious for it.

Like I have already said, I have searched and read through 3 dozen threads on this. I keep all my drivers up-to-date, and I have been through all the solutions already presented in those 3 dozen threads even though none of the users experiencing the problem actually resolved the problem. I've posted my DXDiag in forums before, and people don't even read it. They just glance over it, see that I have a Nvidia Graphic Card and link me to Nvidia's site, see I have a Realtek sound card and link me to Realtek's site.

The only thing I do not do on that list is not multi-task. And if that is causing the problem then its 100% on CA as I have NEVER had a game do this before. And as Ishron says, there is aparently a specific subset of games (including more titles in this series) that has this problem. If the problem was Windows it would happen with every game, but it doesn't. It is a small subset, of poorly programmed games. This game was released in 2009, and this is still an issue. If CA games is unable to fix this problem they should print on the box, FYI the minimum requirements are really not the mimimum requirements, and you might not be able to save.

Instead, I am out $50 because I bought a game that can't multitask because it is poorly programmed. So the real ****ogy is that CA games is a car manufacturer that is releasing a car that breaks down after 20,000KM and then refuses to do anything about it.

Can you start a new campaign?

How many programs do you have running in the background?

Do you alt-tab out a lot?

    Corrupted saves are nothing new.

Yes I can start a new campaign, but what is the point if I cannot play it crashes halfway through and I cannot play to the end?

    No I do not alt-tab.
I do not have other programs running when I play the game.

The game worked properly for some time. Each time I started, I could load saved files and continue.
Then suddenly one day it would not load saved games.
It is not a matter of one save file being corrupted because some other program was running!
Every save file causes the same crash, even files that previously loaded perfectly and have not changed since they were last loaded!!

I agree with crushnaut..CA needs to do something about these crashes..I have these crashes and my specs are more than enough to run this game..but like crushnaut I am now out $60 because I bought an 2 unplayable games..Empire has these problems too...now before you guys say anything let me repeat this...My system is more than enough to run this game, the download was smooth and i did not stop it halfway or anything, and I have not installed any mods, and i do not alt-tab out, the game worked perfectly for a while but then went down the ****per and is now unplayable....This is not meant to offend anyone but this is the way it has to be.

Could very well be. Uninstall it, then try it.

It would not be the first time AVG has stopped Total War game in its tracks.

I kept having a crashing problem that was unrelated to drivers, graphics, etc. What finally fixed it for me was completely uninstalling Steam and then loading everything back up. Fixed everything but a ignorable sound issue.

I am troubled by this because of the time I've put into the campaign. I am also quite surprise many have had this same issue.

It seems a corrupt save-game should not cause the application to crash with proper validation...

Windows reports the crash as a c0000005.

Before I found this forum, I make certain that Win7, drivers, and BIOS were all current. In fact, there had been a BIOS update for "system stability" released less than 2 days ago for the motherboard, and so it's always good to check.

After I found the forum, I found a post that eventually led me to try a tool for editing game files and saved game files:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/packfilemanager/

Evidently, some have had success in repairing corrupted saved games by simply opening the game file in this tool and immediately saving again without modification. I tried the same, but it did not work in my case.

I do not know the compression or file format of the saved games, but the person who wrote this tool must know what it is. I had thought to unpack the various XML files they contain and difference the two in hopes of identifying what may have caused the program to choke while reading the new one in. (There were posts that mentioned certain values must be consistent in all the places they are set in the XML, for example.)

The crash does seem to be something related to the last two saved game files I have--one is an auto-save, and one is a quick-save. The last working saved game file is 30 or so turns back, and the game is able to load it normally.

I also noticed that the game produces its own crash dump files. Having installed via steam, I found these empire_####_crash_$dateT$hour_$minute_$second_C#.mdmp files in the main installed directory.

My guess is the first four #### refer to the build number, and the last # refers to either of two .exe processes I observed. There seems to be an ETW launcher exe, and then possibly a second process that launches the game proper. I observed that after one crashes, the "parent" does as well. So these could be indices either representing the parent/child or an id for the process from developer's perspective.

If anyone knows of success getting the developer to evaluate what happened using these crash dumps, please do let me know how I might start the process. This seems to me the best way to find the cause of the issue.

My installed directory was Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war.

I do not know how to read the dump files. I assume they might be useful inside Visual Studio or perhaps they are in a proprietary format for the developer?

I've attached other relevant information as suggested in the FAQ.

    Any help is appreciated.

I have to agree with prussian0, the sheer fact that the game can calculate 93 turns of gameplay without crashing and then suddenly get a corrupted file is a bit shoddy in my opinion. It makes one seriously rethink starting a new campaign, especially if (as it appears) there is no fix to this issue nor is there any known reason for it. In my case, the game crashes in my loaded auto-save every time Sweden finishes its move and the Marathas are about to start their "turn".

Now, I've see some members say here and in other threads that it's a corrupted save game. That could be it, but the reasons behind this corruption seem kind of insane. ALT+TAB? Malware? I don't buy it. This seems to be more than just a corrupt file, as I've encountered these in the past with SimCity (also other Maxis/Sim games) and AoE III. In those instances, the file would load then immediately cause the game to crash and/or simply not load at all.

As I mentioned above, the fact that it's a very specific line of code that triggers the game to crash, in my case the Maratha Confed. moving their pieces, it leads me to believe the corruption happens from the start of the Campaign file. I say this because the auto-save plays the same moves every time I load it. No variation. And, as we all know, the CPU pre-plans its movements/captures/attacks a few turns in advance.

Bottom line is this, the burden of proof and troubleshooting is not on the consumer here. It rests solely on CA to fix this ASAP. The fact that it's been going on for over three years now is a bit much.

Anyway, I've found a couple of work arounds for this.

    1. Use an earlier/different save. I suggest avoiding the auto-save and using a quick save.
    2. Using a save game editor to redo the Random Seed that's causing the AI move which in turn is causing the crash. (as suggested here: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/27207-Empire-total-war-crashes-after-ending-turn-Solution-corrupted-save)
    3. You can also redo the random seed manually in game by doing other actions which then cause the variables to change (instead of attacking the city, move your units elsewhere).

    Thank you for the suggestions:

    1) I have a quick save at 100 turns and an auto save at 99 turns that both cause the application to crash while loading. I think the next most recent save is at least 20 turns behind.

    2) This was interesting, and I tried it. Unfortunately, it did not change the result.

    3) The problem here is that the crash happens at the loading splash screen, when the progress bar is about a third the way across, so I do not have the opportunity to change my play.

I do not expect that my one compliant will tip the ROI scales making it a sound business decision for CA to investigate the issue. These problems seem numerous, and with a new title in the works I can hardly imagine management would think it wise to put someone on this problem.

But, I do have some motivation to try and save my game.

I also have crash dumps that were produced by the game ostensibly for the purpose of forensically debugging problems that cause a crash.

What I think might be a reasonable request is for someone at CA with access to debug symbols to have a look at the dump files and merely point me in the right direction. I'd just need a hint at what could be causing the problem, and I could probably save the game for myself. Ideally, I'd share my findings with the community and perhaps contribute some code to a tool that could help "sanitize" saved-game files for ETW.

So, I'm asking anyone out there: Do you know a developer who would be willing to spend 20 or 30 minutes looking at this issue, if I pledge to do what I can to investigate the rest of the way?

If so please do reply, and maybe we can make meaningful progress on this together.
